My first Grand Seiko! And a problem!

had a great visit at the nyc seiko boutique today and left, very happily, with my first grand seiko. I know the new design has been kind of polarizing but personally I love the design and love this watch...BUT...a few hours after bringing it home I've noticed that the GMT hand (and possibly to a much smaller degree the hour hand) is a bit slow vis-a-vis the minute hand--about 6 minutes by my estimation. last pic should make this clear. am I being too finicky or should I bring this back?? love love love the watch otherwise but am very annoyed by this...

The slow hand would drive me crazy. It has to go back.

brought it back and spoke to jim this morning... they're sending it out to get looked at and will either get it working correctly or a new one (whichever is quicker?) I expressed my preference for a new one but I guess I'm not so bothered as long as the problem is fixed?

thanks for the advice!

pardon my ignorance, not sure what you mean--they certainly told me any repair would be free for me; any particular reason wouldn't want the repair? they seemed to think at the boutique it might just be a small adjustment...

It should be a simple fix - hands off, hands back on correctly positioned. This is almost certainly not a mechanical issue, just a careless error when the hands were put on in the factory.
Carefully inspect the dial and hands before you take it in and when you get it back to make sure there are no marks you're not happy with.

As much as I love GS, I've seen mis-timed GMT hands and mis-centered dials more times than I'd like. They go back to Japan and are fixed, but it's a common nuisance in my personal (but limited!) experience.

Clarification... If they can fix it and you are happy then that is good if not get it replaced.

The same thing happened to a buddy in the U.K. with the exact same watch. He sent it in for warranty work twice and it came back "within spec" both times. He sold it at a loss and swore off the brand.

Not exactly the best way to break into a new market.

Indeed. It was pretty shocking. They improved the hand position a tiny bit the first time, but it was still off. The second time they claimed it couldn't be made more accurate due to the backlash in the movement's gears.

Hopefully it turns out well for you, but the whole thing kinda knocked the sparkle off GS for me. Is your watch going to the NJ service center? I wouldn't be thrilled with that. They have a looooong history of working (poorly) on cheap seikos. I'm not sure I'd like to be among their first 1,000 GS jobs. Hopefully they do a great job and your watch comes back perfect.

I think maybe I should call them and let them know I'd really prefer a new one...

JP, not sure if your experience was before SCA got them fully staffed for GS, but I just had a very solid experience with my GS diver. It was just supposed to be a sapphire replacement, but they did a full movement service and cleaned up the bracelet, all under warranty. Came back like new in a little over a month.

The Watch Snob, who's keen on Grand Seiko (as am I), would be aghast. Ask for a new one, I say.
