Patek being sold? Rolex to benefit?

So...it has been reported that Patek might be looking to sell. I have also seen recent rumours that Rolex might be the ones fronting the money to take Patek over. Putting that rumour to one side, in my opinion if Patek did sell this would deflate the brand and image Patek have strived for so many years to achieve.

One of the reasons I have held Patek and Rolex in higher esteem than other brands is because they are not owned by conglomerates like Richemont and Swatch group. Whether you agree with me or not, having a privately owned company produce a watch appeals to me more so than conglomerates owning several “luxury brands” eg Breguet, ALS and JLC and marketing them as some kind of individual and independent quality watch makers.

What are your thoughts? Would Patek be making a mistake if they sold? Will the allure/reputation of Patek as being an independent watch maker suffer if they sell out to a large conglomerate?

This has been rumored before. Watch Pro USA had a article on this topic today. As secretive as these two watch brands are, I doubt anyone knows with the exception of the people who need to know. Only time will tell if the rumor is true this time.

Patek buyers tend to be different than Rolex. Of course there is some overlap, yet it is kinda sorta like Porsche guys versus Corvette guys. Generally speaking, and ALL generalizations are wrong-ish, different market. Rolex is fine, whereas Patek is being eaten alive by far more innovative and higher quality mechanical watch producers.

Not really. Both target the rich douchebag market with varying degrees of success.

People can appreciate all sorts of watch brands for many different uses.

Labeling owners as one brand or another ignores diverse needs. No Rolex fits under a cuffed wrist in a tux like a Patek Philippe.

E.G., piloting a Porsche daily yet owning a Suburban to pull a 10,000 pound camper on weekends.

Dot think Rolex will buy Patek, but may take their customers in case they will become part of larger organisation
