5164A Travel Timer

Honestly when I got my 5711 in January 2016 they had the 5167 in the case and I really liked it but couldn't justify buying both. So I told my AD that in the future when they get one I'd be interested. Then the cray times hit and they became unobtanium. I've bought a few other pieces from the AD over the years and about a month ago he messaged asking if I was still interested in an Aquanaut? The rest is history I guess. I didnt have a set "waiting" time so couldn't answer your question. I think ADs never really know what they will get and when. So its at the mercy of the watch gods.

Wife picked it up from the AD the other day and sent this pic. Not the best pic but she couldn't care less about these things lol. I'm still away for business but can't wait to see it in person

Were you able to just order that strap or did you have to find ssommeone with a 5650 to order it for you?

I like the dial but I don't like how the left-side pushers affect the overall case shape. Looks like a fish mouth to me, which I cannot unsee. On top I find the complication as gimmicky as they come. Who is challenged by the simple addition or subtraction of a time difference you have to know anyway? I have travelled enough that this piece of math runs between my ears automatically all the time.

No watch is for everyone, but if you apply that logic you could say “who is challegened by looking at their phone for the time or time in another zone?” And by that logic we should all have Apple watches or something similar. Mechanical watches are all “gimmicky.”

In my book stuff that is useful is not gimmicky. Watches, no matter if mechanical or not, are tools that do the job of telling the time much more efficiently and conveniently than a phone in your pocket or at home. Not gimmicky. But I find this complication gimmicky because my grey matter provides the answer long before I'd have pushed one of those two buttons. No phone needed either way unless you don't know the time difference. But you are right, no watch is for everyone and I am aware that most people find travel time watches incredibly useful.

I’m also pretty good at using the old grey matter to figure the time difference if I’m traveling in the States or in Europe. But flying to places like Hong Kong, Sydney and Singapore make my head hurt, especially if I’ve only been on the ground a couple of days and I’m still a bit groggy. That’s when the 5164 shines for me, especially the home/away night/day windows. But that’s just been my personal experience. I can also accept that one person’s useful GMT is another person’s gimmicky. Good thing they make watches with different complications so we can choose the best one according to our needs and preferences.

This history is super helpful! Great example of how to your point, there aren't ordered lists but your relationship is what matters most.

Thank you! I am very fortunate that I actually like my AD and my SA. My SA is a true watch lover and we can talk watches for hours, plus he's a heck of a nice guy. Each dealer is different for sure so I am lucky. I also lucked out that they carried Rolex for long enough that I was able to acquire the Rolex pieces I wanted over the years, its a bummer they stopped carrying them in January but hopefully they get a cool new brand to start to enjoy.

This thread inspired me to break out the 5164 from hibernation. No travel these days except for this morning’s taxi. I almost forgot how easy and comfortable this one is to wear. It’s such a great watch! Cheers!

In 2017 my AD had a 5164, and I asked for a 5167 instead. It's still my favorite watch to wear and I love the simplicity.

But threads like these always make me question my choices.

The 5167 is a true classic. Ever since I’ve seen Paul McCartney wearing his 5167 in several interviews with such casual elegance, I’ve since always associated that reference with him.

Not sure the man owns a 5167 but he has certainly been seen many times with his 5165, including below.
