Al Capone’s Rolex Prince was ideal for a 1920s Chicagoan gangster

Interesting...

Very interesting article and watch. Never thought Rolex made a rectangular design.
Would Rolex bring the Prince at some tone? Wonder how the feedback is gonna be from Rolex enthusiasts.

Like the retro cool vibe. I’ve seen these pop on eBay occasionally. Since they’re not as popular the prices are pretty good.

I assume you meant, would Rolex bring back the prince model at sometime.
They did bring it back in 2005 and the Cellini line. They were beautiful watches that went over like a lead balloon and they discontinue the prince watch again in 2015.
You can buy a solid gold or platinum Prince in the $10,000 range, less if you look hard.

Al Capone's watch that they photo however does not appear to be a Prince model.
Typically they are more elongated and the second hand area is more defined.
I do not think this watch has the Prince movement.
However I did not see a photo of the movement in the article to confirm.

True that watch in the article is not his actual watch methinks. And true, the Prince was also longer than the general tank shapes. I think the use of the name Prince for the watch in the article is just an anachronism since the name is now generally applied to any Rolex tank shape.

Crown and caliber did a blogpost 3 years back and called it a Prince also - but they captioned the photo correctly. https://blog.crownandcaliber.com/al-capone-watch/amp/

A good article about the history of the Prince can be seen here: https://www.rolexmagazine.com/2017/0...rince.html?m=1

Yeah nah- not a real prince - both al capone and his watch

A prince is a specific watch from Rolex with a specific movement and case

It is rectangular with the winding barrel and balance wheel located at the opposite ends of the movement , allowing for a larger balance wheel.

Also known as the doctors watch ( see adverts) it came in multiple cases- most desirable were the brancard ( stretcher ) shaped, also straight cased and also railway cased.
Cases were made of steel, white gold pink gold yellow gold and rarely platinum.

Some were combination of colours called a Tiger stripe case

Lots of fakes and many more redo dial are around than a true all original Prince

Most rectangular cased Rolex were called Princes but most are not

Not a Rolex, but this was my grandfathers. I had it recently restored and wear it when going out to a nice event.

It was given to my grandfather for Christmas in 1938 by my grandmother, their first Christmas together after being married. He wore it through both WWII and the Korean War.

It is huge for a watch of its time at nearly 44mm in length and 28mm wide.

We are so used to a watch dial saying SWISS or SWISS MADE at the bottom, but this one actually says the full word SWITZERLAND. A neat piece of history.

There's actually one of the tank style Cellini models up FS on WUS right now, if I'm not mistaken.

Interesting read overall.
