Rolex Inflation calculator
Below is Rolex ad from 1964 when a Submariner was $195.00.
According to the inflation calculator it would cost $1,628.00 in 2020. So a 2020 no date Submariner would have cost $982.06 in 1964? Rolex Price Evolution |

Thanks. Interesting to know but I wonder how much an average home cost in 1964 and how much one costs now?

Separate from inflation, another way to analyze would be if you had invested that $195 in the market. Assuming a 7% annual return you'd have $7350 in 2020. Not too terribly far off of the 2020 MSRP for a no date Sub.
Either way, it's safe to say any sport model bought new back then would be doing pretty well for you today, investment wise. Some better than others of course: https://www.gq.com/story/antiques-roadshow-rolex-watch |

At current list of $8,100 for a Sub no date, a 6.8% compounded growth rate. Dow Jones industrials with dividend reinvestment 6.7% rate over the same time-frame.

I prefer the Economist's bigmac index and the like for inflation.

Rolex Inflation calculator
Inflation has nothing to do with appreciation.
That is, the value a ready, willing and able buyer will pay for something. While interesting to wax nostalgic about how low the price was “way back when”, I sense Rolex’s current MSRP’s for hot SS models are fairly reasonable. Back in the early ‘60’s, one could buy a Sub or a used car. Seems not much has changed. Except used cars are easier to find Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
