My sets don’t arrive till the 13th.

Taken from another site:

I am hearing really great things about The Beatles so far! First of all, nice dynamic mastering in stark contrast to Peppers. No harshness when listening at higher volumes.

Secondly, I'm hearing on multiple sites from multiple people who have their sets so far that they have done a truly immersive surround mix, all those who were pretty disappointed with Peppers in 5.1 are singing the praises of the new 5.1 mix of The White Album.

Interesting comments on the dynamics. I haven't measured anything yet. I'm just listening to the stereo version on headphones and enjoying. I will check DR numbers later. FWIW, I think Pepper's 50th (stereo) sounds great, too, dynamics notwithstanding.

Just got to "Helter Skelter." Martin emphasizes the backing vocals as heard on the mono mix, but he keeps the full ending, as on the original stereo mix - i.e., Ringo still has blisters on his fingers. Awesome.

One of the best albums ever, no doubt, but 24 bit, isn’t that upscaling?

Not if Martin (or his engineer) did a direct transfer of the original session multitracks at 24-bit depth (probably at 192 kHz sampling frequency). Since the original source is analog, there is no native bit depth or sampling rate of the tape. The native rate is therefore determined by the transfer. If Martin transferred using 32-bit, then a 24-bit file would actually be a downsample.

Side note: I haven't delved into the liner notes yet, so if Martin or his engineer explained the technology used for the transfers, I'm unaware of it.

Listened to the 5.1 Bluray last night.

What a fantastic job Giles and the crew did on this set.

Me and My Monkey in 5.1 is fantastic

I got through all six audio discs. The album remix sounds great, and the supplemental material is an embarrassment of riches. Indeed, it got mind-numbing to listen to it all back-to-back. I probably should have paced myself, but I was like a fat guy at an all-you-can-eat buffet. Once I started, I just couldn't stop.

If I have one gripe, it's that the package doesn't include remixes of the singles that were also recorded during the sessions - "Revolution," "Hey Jude," "Lady Madonna," etc. We got remixes of "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" in the Sgt. Pepper box, and we even get demos of the the 1968 singles in the White Album box. Given the surfeit of supplementary material, it doesn't seem like too much to ask that the collection be rounded out by having that handful of extra tracks.

All that said, it's a great collection, and well worth the purchase.

Giles will be whacking us for another couple hundred bucks here in 10 months for the Abbey Road 50th Ann....

They'll be in that set

Actually, I'm counting on it, but joking aside, I don't see why an Abbey Road set would contain singles from the White Album period. Maybe we'll get a remixed Past Masters at some point.
