Porsche = IWC. Highly functional timepieces, specifically designed to deliver against set purposes. Excellently made. Recognisable. Stretches into the high end. Jag = FPJ. Less ubiquitous, fabulously made. Strong loyalty amongst aficionados.

A Rolex is a Porsche! You get in both cases the most for your money, classic design, iconic.

I suppose I can see the Mercedes Rolex comparison and think it’s ratger valid. I have quite a few of each and appreciate them both very much. Both brands are Marketing machines and are thus incredibly recognizeable.

An MB??? You must be joking. It's really a German Cadillac for the local rather porcine Burgermeister.

Meh, I don't feel watches and cars these days can be compared like this. Maybe 20 years ago they could be....
However, now, BMW/Mercedes has 5 million different models to choose from and a lot of them are entry level garbage. Unless you have one of the higher end models, I'm not sure owning a BMW or Mercedes signifies luxury or even wealth like it used to. Rolex hasn't been watering down the market offering new models for $3k, etc. I'd compare to Rolex to Porsche.....even the low end Porsches are the cost of a high end BMW/Mercedes these days. |

The current styling of Mercedes just don't tick off my boxes. I like the Rolex style much better in comparison.

When my wife brought home her new MB GLK and I found out it had plastic seats, I knew the Mystique was over. When I told my sister that her ML was made in Alabama, she threw up in her mouth.
Generally speaking, you never get what you pay for. $20K GMT, you've got to be kidding. |

I don't even have a huge problem with them producing SUV's, but dammit if it's going to have the word "Porsche" on the back of it, it better be a serious performance machine. For them to produce a ~250hp Macan (roughly the same performance specs as my wife's Toyota Highlander) is just embarrassing for a company that has forever been known as one of the greatest sports car manufacturers of all time. The Macan is basically a Porsche CR-V, and the base Cayenne is just a Porsche Explorer. They should have only produced SUV's with high performance (and high pricetags) and not offered it in this economy models. They are destroying the brand with this money grab. How would we feel if Rolex offered a Submariner-lite or whatever that sold for $1,000. I'm sure they would sell a gazillion of them but the rest of us in the Rolex "premium" models wouldn't feel too great about it and might look at another watch company the next time around. Like Rolex, Porsche is not supposed to be common, it's supposed to be extremely expensive, it's supposed to feel at least a little exclusive, it's part of the brand cashet in my opinion. Porsche is going the Omega route and trying to be everything to everyone, and as a longtime lover of their vehicles it's hard for me to watch... |

Rolex closest to Porsche in my opinion. They both have some iconic lines and are instantly recognizable even from model to model. They try to keep a family resemblance going. Both extremely reliable for what they are compared to their competition. Both have some models that only the true fan will recognize. They both control their supply and demand really well on their most sought after models, ie Sub, Daytona, GMT, GT3, GT2 RS etc.

Supercars have moved on in huge leaps and bounds, we now have hypercars and autoexotica, all of which have pushed Porsche in to the sportscar category unfortunately. How many times have you read reviews that call it the luxury sportscar you can drive every day? Hell, you just have to look at the sheer size of the new 911 to realise its far from the car it used to be .... evolution or not. As much as it pains me .... I accept that Nissan GTR's, Mitsubishi Lancers, Subari Impretsa's, some BMW's, Merc's and Audi's, ALL show all but the GT and RS cars within the 911 camp a clean set of heels these days .... it is what it is, but I'd still rather climb in to my 8 yr old 911 than a brand new one of any of the aforementioned, any day of the week, so I'm glad the Macan and Cayenne, Panamera etc exist to keep the books in the black so I can put my revs in the red.

Rolex to me is like a newer Jeep. Tough as heck, reliable, just enough refinement to start getting kind of snooty, and nearly unmatched at what they're good at. But overpriced, highly desired by the masses, and with ridiculous resale value.

I haven't read all of this, but it appears there are a lot of opinions stated above. The one indisputable fact is that the Rolex Daytona is the watch equivalent of the Porsche 911.
