Getting tax back in Italy

Would be grateful for your info.

I just visited the Canali distribution center for a tour. And it was incredible. Truly super impressive.

Afterwards they allowed us some private shopping afterwards. Also amazing. I did not have my passport, so they charged me tax.

I realize I can get my tax back at the airport? Can anyone confirm how this is done? And if it will be US dollars or Euro?

I’m sure I can figure it all out. But I’d be grateful for any info based on your own experience.

Thanks.

Hi.
The AD has to give you the invoice(receipt)were they shows that you paid full price, with that receipt you can go to VAT at the airport or you can go to Global Blue office or at airport too and they will process the tax refund. I attcing to pictures of the receipt the AD has to provided and the Global Blue envelope, you can down load the apps too.

^^^

It was two sport coats.

I did not pay full price. Does that mean I can’t get my tax back? Just because I got a discount?

No, discount is fine. You need one of those "Tax-Free" stamps on your receipt. Or registered with Global Blue.

Allow plenty of extra time before your flight takes off as the lines at VAT can be quite long...

Seth, no problem. Go to the airport a little early, 30 mins is enough. Don't go through check in, in case you get a customs person who is a hard ass and wants to see the jackets. Get the stamps. You can then get your refund back on your cc, euro, or usd.

Just left Milan this morning and now in Munich. Wish I would have known.

I bought a Rolex in Barcelona and as the tax was higher than a few 100 Euro I had to claim it when I got back home through some paperwork. All went smoothly though.

Oh man. I wish I knew as well.

I ended up back at my hotel early doing nothing. That’s too bad. We would have had a blast.

Enjoy Munich. It’s amazing how much you travel. We definitely need to catch up!!

Hit the bar/lounge/nobu in the Armani Hotel. The eye candy will keep you busy :)

Just did it last week in Milano. Airline told me to get refund after clearing customs which was a great call. No line at all. You can get refund on credit card or for a small fee get refund in euros. Just make sure you have refund paperwork filled out from Canali.

fastmd - you are spot on about eye candy at Armani lounge and Nobu!

Another thing to note is that you lodge your refund when you leave the Eurozone.

Pizza is interesting here. Truly amazing.

And it supposed to be eatin with a knife and fork.

The watch is nearly 20 years old. And very beautiful.

Lastly, I don’t think I’m getting the money back. No card from Canali. Only a receipt from the store. Not stamped.

Yeah, probably not. They would have needed your passport at time of purchase.

Keep the photo of passport in your phone, in most cases the number of passport is enough for tax refund papers

Don’t think it can be done now unless you can go back to the store as they would need to help you with the paperwork. Enjoy the rest of the trip!

As others mentioned you need the global blue stamp and the paper work.

I found in Italy I normally had to ask for the tax free stamp, or they wouldn’t do it.
Food and wine is too good in Italy I’m head back next summer looking forward to it.

You will need the goods with you at the VAT refund window.
It is always best if the store completes the form (usually only the large retailers do this). Certain retailers (eg Gucci and others) have a “premier” window which enables you to speed through the line. If the retailer has not done the paper work for you it will be a huge PIA.
You can get the refund in any currency, but there will be an exchange rate charge to get it in dollars or a non-euro currency. Or, you can ask to have it put on your credit card.

Leave plenty of extra time to do this, especially if you have non-premier items. Passport control in Rome can sometimes be an hour wait, and that is AFTER the VAT refund windows, so keep that in mind.
