Is the SD4K now rare?

Is the 116600 now rare, being discontinued after just 3 years and relatively slow sales compared to other more popular models in the range?

I walked into the Rolex boutique on 5th Ave in NYC on Friday. They said it was discontinued and they aren't getting anymore. The saleswoman actually said she bought the last one they had for herself. They think there may be a new model coming out for the 50th, but they were just speculating. They said they don't get any hints about what's coming, most of the time they said they just check this forum!

Nope. They aren't rare. And the discontinuation seems to be a rumor still....

Stopped into a Rolex AD this weekend and they laughed at the rumors about the SD4k. They said they have never heard of Rolex tipping their hand before Basel and it is all hearsay and speculation.

The Sea Dweller has never been a top-seller but it has a following.

I wouldn't believe either discontinuation nor an "anniversary" issue until I see it.

Man, that's a good looking SD! Very nice.

OP, there's ample rumor and speculation that Rolex will do something with the Sea-Dweller at Baselworld, but at this point it's nothing more than that; rumor and speculation.

No, they're not rare. Come over to Singapore. Every AD has at least one sitting in their display case.

When asked about the Sea-Dweller, usually you hear a heavy sigh first. After some chit chat, they'll readily tell you that the Sea-Dweller is their slowest moving Rolex.

You do know that the slow sellers today become the 6 figure collectibles of the future.

I can see it now. Rolex ADs will get a 'spike' in SD4K requests

I suspect assembly line has been switched to 50th anniversary edition, which is why SD4000 is difficult to source at the current moment.

D-Blue has been rumored to be discontinued from time to time over the past several years..... Rolex HQ doesn't have the practice of tipping off any AD on discontinuing/upcoming model....

when i dropped my 16600 in for service last week, the gentleman there didn't mention anything about the new six digit sd4k being discontinued. he DID, however, say there was a possibility of a 42mm sd4k being released as an anniversary model.

i'll take what he says with a grain of salt. Rolex has been historically mum about these sort of things until the very moment of announcement in basel.

on a side note, he was wearing a very very nice 16760 fat lady. i regret flipping mine years ago after seeing his.

The Paul Newman Daytonas are a great example
The SDC could appreciate significantly, but it could take a while (decades?), and I may not be around then...

Tell me about sd4k comfort people. I have a BLNR, bbn, and 42expii, and that's how I'd rank them in terms of comfort. Is the case back in this thing obtrusive? Though about trading the expII for a hulk, YM, or sd4k.....and I'm not remembering how it was last I tried it on.....

My Take on new Sea Dweller

I have read to many instances where forum members have gone to an AD and was told the watch was discontinued. I had the same experience as my AD tried to order one and and was told that they are discontinued. I also think that it is unlikely that the Deep Sea will be the only Sea Dweller. I believe that it is very possible that there will be a 50th anniversary edition. How will it be different? Who knows?

My best guess related to possibilities of the new watch are a bigger 42mm case, debut of a new movement (with a longer power reserve as Tudor In-house movements go 70 hours), a different colored dial, or something done with red lettering harkening to the older watches.

The SD4k is very comfortable. I was also worried about weight, height , bulbous back, etc - especially since my last was a 30yr old 38mm omega sea master. The SD4k is so comfortable I basically have worn it 24hrs a day since I got it 5 months ago. Weight doesn't bother me at all, height is fine under shirt sleeves, slight bulb of the back lifts the crown off my wrist so it never digs in.

Well one way of raising interest in a watch. Tell everyone it's being discontinued !! Soon sell the ones sitting in AD windows then.

That said there are big rumours of an anniversary watch and most seem to be expecting this. So what happens when it's no longer the anniversary do they go back to the old one or if it's a bigger size do they get rid of let's say red lettering and revert to a conventional SD to conitunue sales ??
