Peter, great story and an amazing watch. Part of my interest in watches is due to the two my father left me. Once a gold Bulova autowind and the other a gold Tiffany pocket watch. The former from the early '60s and the latter from the '20s or '30s. He would never have spent the money to get involved in this hobby like I have. He was a stamp collector (I guess that can also get expensive). I hope you are on the mend and we can look forward to many more of your posts!!!

Thank you for sharing such a touching story. Beautiful watch, made infinitely more special due to its history.

Thanks Peter,
Your deeply touching narrative attached to the history of your Dad's watch
will, I hope, as you probably intended, throw a whole new perspective
around this forum's apparent obsession with a watch's financial value
and it's investment prospects.

What's that slightly corny line from Geneva; "A Rolex doesn't just tell
time, it tells history". Somehow seems to ring true here.

I hope your health improves quickly Peter.

Absolutely touching and makes me even now imagine my future legacy and what I hope my timepieces (both current and future) will mean to my family as a 31-year-old. Your story should be in the “A Man and His Watch” book, and a shame only the famous were included in there.

I do have a few questions for you if you’d be open to sharing:
- do you ever wear this piece or keep it as a treasure to reflect on?
- hopefully many years into the distance but when your time comes, is there anyone to receive this watch? If so, what does he or she think about it’s history? Any connection to it and do you think there’s the possibility it’ll remain in the family down the line? Hopefully they know this and so much more about your dad. Don’t mean to be morbid but rather curious as to the path you envision it’ll be on.

My father is fortunately in great health in his 60s and is no WIS whatsoever, but I’ve always admired his quartz dress two-tone Omega my mom bought him for their 20th wedding anniversary. He never wears it (or cares about it) but does once in awhile when I’m around as he knows I appreciate it and watches in general. One moment that’ll only become more treasured in the decades to come is when his watch stopped working and battery was dead. He saved it for an upcoming trip to visit me in NYC and thought it would be a fun excuse to go to the boutique together and get it “serviced.” He first was flabbergasted they bothered to put gloves on and said not to worry about such a watch. And then when they quoted 50 bucks, he paid it as he didn’t feel like going elsewhere, but went on a funny tangent while in the store about can you believe the cost these days for a simple battery and loudly enough to make everyone laugh, including the woman behind the desk. Boy was I embarrassed! Now he only gets it serviced at his local watch shop for about 10 bucks. I hope to keep it treasured in my collection one day but hopefully no time soon.

Hope your health improves!

Thank you Peter for the wonderful share. I lost my father a couple years ago, he had given me his DJ a couple years prior.

I remember the day he bought it, from Tiffany's no less, the pride and the joy it brought him. No amount of money will ever make me part with it, this is something that is quite common with this remarkable brand.

Unfortunately, more and more threads are about the value, the deal, and the investment. Whereas the true value will and should lie within the story.

Real story, real awesome story. Thanks again.
