In 1988 Rolex started to use the excellent Zenith El Primero movement. It had a date function, but Rolex took it out as well as modifying it to make the movement more robust and requiring a longer service interval.

Nope. Not all watches look good with a date. As much as it is a function, a watch is also an accessory/jewellery. No Thank You to a piece like the Dayton please!
... For those who won't buy a watch without a date due to functionality... are we all working in coal minds here where we don't have access to day light for days or something? I think we should exercise our brains just a bit to retain a bit of memory. The date doesn't change that rapidly where you have to constantly stare at the function to know when it is. |

Date not needed on all models. Variety is good.

This is why you need multiple rolexes. My weekday watches are gmt and day date. Then on the weekend I put on my Daytona... problem solved.

Been wearing my Daytona for over a year now and don’t misss the date at all. I’ve got this thing called an iPhone if I need to know the date, day of the week, moonphase and even the weather. I hope they never add the date to the Daytona. It looks better without it.

Time comes in handy on a watch as I’d have to pull out my iPhone several times a day. The date I just need to know once if that. Most people I know don’t wear a watch at all.

The date sometimes would make the dial look a little more busy

This is an example of a smart, balanced and well informed post. It's in direction opposition to the post which started this thread.

If I had to choose between a watch with a broken time or a broken date I would pick the broken time. I write the date perhaps >50/day and am still consulting my watch at the end of the day to remind myself what the date is. I don't think I'm stupid, just forgetful. I certainly consult my wrist much more often to get the date than the time. The few watches I have without a date I simply don't wear to work and change into in the evening when I don't care what the date is.

I find it hard to believe that so many people need to be reminded of the date more than once a day.

LOL, why do they make a Sub without a date. They made the Submariner for like 20 years before they made a Submariner Date. It is classic Rolex and iconic.

For me, a date is just one more thing to set correctly. Give me a Daytona, explorer 1, a two-handed Panerai or a Sub without a date and I'm content. To each their own.

God no. The next quartz Rolex, sure, but I hate setting the date on my watch.

Sorry if a bit off topic, but I'd love to see a power reserve complication on my watches!

I could not disagree more. I much much prefer a no date watch. No competition whatsoever in my mind. I can't think of 1 watch that has date and no date options available in which I prefer the date version. I actually hate when a beautiful dial is ruined by a date aperture.

Why do watches have a date?
Answer - to charge mote for an additional complication
A tells the time. Yesmyou can add features, but its main "feature" is the time. My two Rolexes have NO date. Subc Exp |

From a bigger picture perspective, isn't it good that a subset of population do not like the Daytona for their own reasons, so that those who really like the Daytona can get it easier?
