I thought you guys would get a laugh from this

Tonight at work a call came out for a theft at one of the hock shops involving a Rolex watch. Knowing that a Rolex is involved it of course peeked my interest so I went by to see what happened. When I get there a tourist is in front of this hock shop waiving a watch at me. He tells me that he won a few bucks at the Trop and wanted to buy himself a Rolex. So he went to the first hock shop he saw (they're all over the place, most of them are real sleaze bags preying on desperate folks who have lost all of their money or drunk or uneducated buyers who don't know any better). He saw a Rolex that he liked. The employee told him that it was an eight year-old special edition Sub with no box or papers. The tourist negotiates the watch down to $1500 from the $2000 asking price.
He then takes the watch to another hock shop to see what they will offer him for it in an attempt to determine if he got a good deal. The next shops laughs at him and throws him out telling him that it's worth nothing and is fake. Thats when he called us.
He tells me that he is quite the connoisseur of Rolex watches, mind you he's wearing a Casio G-Shock, and that this is the best fake he had ever seen. When he showed me the watch I could hardly keep a straight face. I held this thing up to my wrist next to my watch and told him how nice it was compared to mine and I now knew why people paid so much money for them. This connoisseur looked right at both watches and didn't even realize I was wearing a GMT.
Anyway, we got his money back after the first shop swore they didn't know it was fake and they were nice enough to let him keep the fake. He decided not to do anything about the rip-off. Before we got there he threw the watch while arguing with the shop clerk breaking the seconds hand and bracelet, so the watch was trash. I told him how you guys would get a laugh out of this so he let me keep the POS so I could show you a picture. So here it is, the best fake this Connoisseur had ever seen.

I can certainly see how a connoisseur wouldn't be able to tell these apart.

I thought you would all get a laugh out of this.

Sure, he said the black dial flight crew model would be in tomorrow. The match set is a bargain at $19.95.

You didn't say you wanted a serial number. That may take a little longer, he'll have to sit in the back and etch one in.

I believe in buyer beware. But would have done something more against the shop. They are a business and should not be selling fake crap.

Great story, CJ. P.T. Barnum summed it up very nicely: There's a sucker born every minute.

Um, yuck. If this is what the general public think goes for a genuine Rolex then Rolex needs to fire their ad company. :)

It's funny that the pawn shop didn't spot this. It's been my experience that pawn shops are some of the more savvy places when it comes to fakes. Good thing you were handy to set things righ!

Great story, CJ. Question: what did the pawn shop pay for it?

Hell, if you gave that ground crew Sub an orange dial, I doubt JJ would have bothered bargaining it down from two grand before grabbing it.

Knowing those pawn shop creeps, they probably stole it. Can you believe JJ came all the way to A.C. and didn't bother to tell me....oops! I promised I wouldn't tell you guys it was him.

Yeah, that fake GMT on the left looks like a $5 Chinese piece. You must be very hard on your watches catching the bad guys, your crown is missing, and the crystal is cracked. Time to send it in to be refurbished, send pic's of it when you get it back!

Hey, I paid $25 for that GMT and it's Italian not Japanese. Besides, they promised me nobody could tell the difference.

Well, your tourist friend couldn't tell the difference and he's a nobody, right?
