My Living Reef.

The tank is 8ftX3ftX3ft half inch plate glass, now divided into two separate tanks with different filtration systems. One for corals and small reef fish, the other for large marine fish.Have only two large fish left now both well over 15 years old,but when they die will close the tank down. The tank is party built into the wall,in a long passage type narrow room, And gets very little natural lighting.Pictures taken with old fashion 35mm film image then scanned from negative into computer.

Living reef various corals both hard and soft.

Clown Trigger Fish about 15.inches body length.

Emperator Angel fish about 12.inches body length.

Well with proper husbandry you should very rarely have to clean them.Mine has been running now for well over 10 years, without a major clean. All I do is change a certain percentage of the water every 2 weeks. And just clean the front glass of algae once a week and thats about it.If your system is biologically sound it needs very little maintainence.

Tell me Padi, do you have provisions for a power outage? I know someone who has a very large aquarium at his business location, and he has installed generators to provide power if there is an outage. Just curious.

Yes I have a very small honda generator 2000 watts, its the coral tank that would suffer the most with the lack of lighting. But would be ok for about 12 hours without power. The fish a bit longer before the biological filter would start to die.Heating is not a problem its quite a large volume of water, and the temperature drops quite slowly. And I have two battery powered air pumps that would supply enough water movement over the biological filter bed to keep them active.

I sold this tank last year. I had it for approx 4 years. It didn't have enough time to keep up with it anymore, unfortunately. Here's a pic.

One of my partners has a large set up at home and he, too, installed backup generators strictly for the tanks. We were at his house one night for a barbeque when the transformer on the utility pole near his home blew. His generators automatically came on line, but the house remained dark except for the tanks. They just chugged away without a hitch. You just gotta know where your priorities are.

Yes you are correct Frans there are about 15 in the invert tank, they do a good job in the UK we call them turbo snails. There are various fish that will graze on algae, but the downside is some olso eat the coral polyps. And various invertebrates like Nudibranchs, small hermit crabs,Jester Goby and small blenny type fish all play the part in a well run system.

That looked like a very nice set up.pity you had to let it go. Like the way the pulse coral was growing up the back of tank.
