Black hands on Rolex other than Buckley DJ?
Hello,
I am interested in this watch: https://www.vintagecaliber.com/colle...re-black-hands I see that it has black hands, and I thought that black hands were only offered on Buckley DJs. I emailed the seller/site, and the response I got was "The handset is original Rolex and original to the watch: you can also see lacquered parts on the hour markers matching the handset." I searched and searched but could not find a single DJ with a black dial. Is this truly a rare piece of did someone swap out the hands at one point? Any help would be appreciated! |

Never seen that before on a non-Roman watch. Frankly, if those hands are original Rolex they have some value as black hands for a 1570 are no longer available from Rolex. Most watchmakers simply paint metal hands when they need a set.
The black markers are rare but the ones I've seen came with ordinary metal hands. I have a 1625 with the "onyx marker" dial. As you can see, ordinary metal hands. |

That’s a replacement handset. The correct hands have onyx inlays.

Onyx inlays? Please explain as I have never seen this before. I have seen water soaked lume turn black, I have seen painted lume on the CERN milgauss but I have never seen a factory hand with an onyx inlay.

Can we please stay on topic and discuss whether black hands on non-Buckley Datejusts are original or not?

Exclaiming that it is a rare setup is just a marketing ploy. Most likely sometime in the watches life the original hands were corroded and someone replaced them with a set of buckley hands to match the hour markers.
