Help please. What do I have? (2nd try)

[Apologies if this gets posted twice]

Hi All,

I have a watch that was given to me by a family friend over 20 years ago. I recently thought I would try to get some more information about it and I've been having a hard time finding out much. I have no interest in selling it. This is just for my own interest. I don't know much about Rolex's, so perhaps I'm just not looking in the right place.

See the attached pictures.

I can't find any serial numbers, etc.
On the 12 o'clock side of the case, it looks like it just says "STAINLESS STEEL," with no numbers.
I can't make anything out anything on the 6 o'clock side.

Any idea or help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I think these have been discussed on the forum before. It's a Tudor with a repainted dial to reflect the Rolex heritage. Unfortunately, these don't have any collector or resale value, but if you enjoy it that's all that matters.

I believe it is a REF 4220 California Dial late 50s obvious repaint.

Thanks everyone, that helps a lot!

One follow up question. Was this kind of thing done as a novelty? I mean if it's not supposed to be a specific Rolex model then people who know anything about Rolex's aren't going to think that it's real, right?

"Rolex Tudor" on the dial would be a tipoff for anyone, frankly. Sure Tudors and Rolexes are closely linked but there's no "Rolex Oyster Tudor" model. It's a neat watch but that dial is a dead giveaway it's been modified by some third party. If I were wearing it and anyone asked, I'd tell them immediately it's a Tudor with a redial and worn for fun.

There are extremely rare examples of Rolex & Tudor on the dial. This is not one of them.

Unfortunately in this case, the bracelet is worth more than the watch head itself. The dial is either an old aftermarket fake or it is the original dial that has been badly repainted. The hands are not original and it needs a new crown as well.

The model 7809 Tudor watch head itself is worth about $350 the way it sits and the model 7205 bracelet is about $400-500.

Your watch most likely started life in the 1950s as a Tudor Reference 7809 Oyster Prince. The dial was redone. I've seen a number of Tudor watches where the dial was redone with Rolex looking dials. An analogy would be putting a Cadillac badge on a Chevy. I acquired a Tudor 7809 many years ago where someone did just that (plus a couple diamonds). I would not buy something like that today, but 30+ years ago I thought it was kind of cool.

Thanks again everyone. This is really great information!

I am going to look into getting a more appropriate band, something more like the original and less Rolex.

Best to all.

The 7205 bracelet you have is the correct bracelet for the Tudors

Thank you for the info! And if I hang around on this forum long enough I bet I'll eventually see one, ha.
