OK, this really bugs me.

I am trying to think of how to explain this situation without calling out a fellow (and long time) TRF member... There is a TRFer, whom I have never met, but have had a few cordial comunications with in threads. He is on the other side of the country, and like I said, we have never met or spoken or exchanged PMs directly, but I have commented on a few of his posts and visa-versa and everything has been cordial if not friendly. Now, this member kind of, well, did a nice thing for me. It’s really hard to explain without getting specific, but ... well, it was just a nice thing I appreciated; leave it at that.

Now fast forward a few months, and I obtain in my possession an item (not expensive, maybe $70 bucks) that is related to this nice thing he did; and I think it would be a cool act to give it to him. So I send him a PM asking for a shipping adress, I have a small gift to send. He replies he has no idea what I am referring to and leave him alone. I tried a couple times more, explaining I am not a weirdo (well, I am, but it has nothing to do with this gift) and this is in no way a scam, and if he was uncomfortable giving a home address maybe a PO box or work address or anything would suffice, and no I wasn’t sending it collect or anything (can you do that? ). And... Nothing

I respect someone’s desire for privacy, and I’m done trying to convince him to let me send him a small gift, I guess I’ll keep the item, or maybe give it away on here or something, and I shouldn’t get worked up, but... WTF!? Try and do something nice for someone....

Send it to me my friend, you have the address.

Someone is very afraid to leave their addresses of different reasons.

BTW. Congrats to your 14K post.

If he said to leave him alone, I’d respect his request and move on. People have a lot of things going on in their lives and we see only a tiny little slice of it here, and i think that the interweb is an escape from the real world for a lot of people. A blessing for some limited by illness, etc. and a curse for others whose time and energy would be best spent elsewhere.
Having said that, I’ll PM my address

Best to keep it private. Calling him out...even just between the two of you...in public is not good.

Let it go Paul.

Before I came to TRF I would never have given out my address to a 'stranger' on the internet.

TRF is pretty unique.

Huge congrats on the 14,000th post by the way!!

I'll take it Paul. You have my address.

Let it go. This is the internet, and people have an expectation of privacy. Not everybody is willing to transcend this virtual lifestyle and make things a reality.

Your heart was in the right place, but think about it, Paul . . . .

Would you want you to have your address?

You guys are all 100% correct, of course. My only option is moving on and forgetting about it. But can you understand why it kind of pissed me off? Really I was trying to do a nice (and cool) thing, if I could explain the whole situation (which I won’t) I guarantee you would all understand, and get a kick out of it. Anyway, no Adam, no names or identification and it’s over and done with.

And I knew several of you guys would be sending me your address for the free gift. So, let’s see, now I have to buy one for Jocke, Brian, Abdullah... geez, this is going to be expensive!

I can understand why you're surprised. But pissed off, no. It's not like he keyed your Ferrari. Context is important, and if you allow piddly things to spike your blood pressure you will have a short and uncomfortable existence.

The thing is in the mail, right?

So when first telling people about the bad thing that happened you explain:

“I gave this guy from the internet my address.”

Imagine the reaction. Most people would think that the worlds dumbest move.

While a nice gesture from you Paul, most people would think we are nuts for sharing our adressses and sending people things.

I'll use this opportunity to open the bidding for Abdullah's address, which I obtained long ago in a ruse involving shellfish and a mallet.

I had a Saudi prince contact me once who wanted my home address.
No way I said!!!
I wasn’t born yesterday.
I just gave him my bank account info and my Social Security number. Home address? Never.

Don't sweat it Paul but I know exactly how you feel as the exact same thing happened to me years ago.

A member here that I've only talked to (on the forum) a couple of times and didn't know had a lenghty post about how a part on his watch was discolored and wanted it to be under warranty and that he couldn't get it.

This happened many years ago before he became a moderator and I of course felt sorry for him so that day when I went to my Ad I of course bought the part for him.

Just like you Paul I sent him a PM and asked for his address so I could send him the part.

Guess what, not even a courtesy reply!

A week later another (to me completely unknown) posted about the same part so I made the same offer to him.

He replied immediately and I sent him the part and he later started a thread thanking me.

Moral of the story, after that I stopped buying parts for ungrateful people and never approached unknowns again.

I think you can rest knowing “It’s the thought that counts”. You tried and it didn’t work out. I doubt there was any ill will on the intended recipients part.

Don't take it personally. I would hardly give my address to someone I don't know on the internet. For all I know you could be SWATTING me (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swatting)

You know? This is where my wife lives, kids, and of course where I stash my watches - and you know what I have!. I'd be weary.

Again, I'd be weary of anyone, even if you had 100k posts.

BUT, I'd give mine to you Paul. I don't know you, but your reputation precedes you!

Maybe he wants to remain anonymous? Maybe he is someone who would be publicly recognizable and he doesn't want that. Just respect his privacy and leave it at that.

Banter or barter? I've been accused by English friends of the latter, but not the former.

I agree with those who state you should leave this alone and move on. There is not much of a reason why you should be "pissed off" from an outsider's perspective - sorry, you asked and now have responses.

In fact, if I was the guy you are speaking of, I might be a little pissed to read your post about it in the first place.

You are obviously a thoughtful guy. Give the gift to someone who feels like receiving one.

Good luck
