Project Alaska

Love my Alaska. Didn’t realise how much they’d gone up. Used to wear it everyday! Anyone else in the club? How I got mine is a bit mental!

Nice, congratulations, yes prices have gone crazy on a few of the more unusual Speedmasters.

Love the watch! I remember seeing it in the catalogs from 2007, when I bought my first Omega from an AD.

They've certainly gone up, and I can easily see why. The Speedmaster is one of the few watches someone can be a dedicated collector of. No shortage of options over the years, each with a unique part of history.

Please share some of the story with regards to how you managed to obtain this one. Congrats and enjoy in good health.

I have noticed as well a strong price increase of the Alaska (now it's worthy between 25k and 40k on Chrono24).

Given the latest crazy prices of many watches, this new price for Alaska makes sense because, amongst all the Omega Speedmaster Limited Edition, is the most particular one next to the Snoopy. And if the first Snoopy had almost a production of 6000 pieces and it's now worthy 25k, Alaska was produced in less than 2000 pieces so, from a market perspective, its strong value increase makes sense.

That’s bonkers re price but of no significance as it’ll never be sold.

So where did I get it…….

Dates are approximate but a friend asked if I’d ever seen one after seeing it somewhere in about ~2015. Loved it as soon as I saw it and intrigued me with the limited run and uniqueness. Started looking into it and soon realised it had long ‘sold out’ and saw it was actually released in 2008 but found a few forum posts saying they’d found one recently and it appeared they might have been forgotten about. I made a few enquiries and found someone who seemed to deal in secondary omegas and they said to leave with. I didn’t hear anything and then about 6 months later there was an email from him when I got into work with ‘guess what’ as the subject.

Turns out an AD he knew was doing a stock take and had found one in his vault and wondered if I wanted it!

To top it off because it was classed as new I could have it with full warranty and they could knock 20 % off the original 2008 selling price to get rid of it. I wired the money to my guy and went up town to pick it up the next day.

Crazy really. Hopefully my kids will go on enjoying it long after I’m gone.

As an aside I have tiny wrists so the leather strap is way too big and I never seem to get anywhere with omega when enquiring about a smaller strap. I have seen one online but don’t know if my strap is the smaller one (there appears to be two sizes?) to start with?? It actually looks better with the steel but would be nice to have a better choice.

Wow, that's quite the story! This is definitely a keeper, and the uniqueness of how it was obtained by chance only makes it more appealing.
