PM vs SS is it worth it?

20190530_205912-784x876.jpg

For nearly four years I have owned a SS Rolex SubC. I love it. In fact I reviewed it here just over a year ago. Naturally, like many I always wondered what would it be like to own the same watch, essentially, in PM. I was able to do so just days ago and am very lucky!

It begs the following questions: After owning both is it worth it? What are the differences? And would I still own both after acquiring a model that retails for four and a half times that of the other?

The Weight

The first thing people always point out is the weight. I can assure you they are night and day. Now why is the weight such an important factor? I cannot tell you for all. Wearing the gold vs the ss you notice the weight. The watch just feels like a pound on the wrist. It seems even more like a tank and very high end. To me the weight is the reminder of the preciousness of the watch. That said many say you get used to it. However, I doubt it ever feels light even if that is the case.

The PCLs

Years ago when I first joined people started daily threads complaining about PCLs. I never have. The PCLs add a dressy component and really refine the look of the PM vs the SS. The SS is pure tool and I mean that in a good way.

The Dial

I went with the sunburst blue. It catches the light and looks fantastic. It is my favorite dial in the Rolex line up. Compared to the deep black dial on my SS it really catches all light and can look black to light blue depending.

Some Subtle Differences

On the SS the screws on the removable links show through both sides. On the PM it does not.

Rehaut seems to be more steep on SS versus PM.

Answering the Questions Proposed and More

After owning both is it worth it? Hell yes.

Would I still own both after acquiring a model that retails for four and a half times that of the other? Yes. One is more covert and true to the original. The other is a dressy piece that really pops on the wrist. It is the ultimate show piece submariner.

White gold vs yellow gold? I would go yellow gold. It just screams to me. Some say it is too much. I say no. And I am not a loud person. But for this price and only owning one PM piece I know I made the right choice for me.

Did I have buyers remorse? For a split second. But then after wearing it for a bit I thought about the feeling it gave vs cash in the bank. The remorse went away quickly.

Should you go PM, consolidate etc.? Yes. Life is short. PM Rolex bought right hold decently well. Do not wait forever. Sell some SS if needed. But do it. You will not regret it. The only regret will be why you waited so long.

There's something about a YG sub that just makes me all warm and fuzzy.

I totally agree, i had been wearing a sub for almost 15 years. Originally the 5 digit then traded up to a 6 digit. Few years later and I also had the PM itch. After trying on the DD40, Daytona, YMii, blue sunburst and black dial subs, the black dial stole my heart. Although I had a SS black dial, i didn’t get care. After few months I then traded up from the SS sub to the SD43. And now I feel I have 2 of the best rolexes in current production.

Two great watches. I agree that it can be bulky but the look supercedes the weight.
congrats

That was a great write-up. The PM Sub at approx. 1/2 lb. is a Hefty Piece, and one that should be an addition to an SS.

With the GlideLock, and it's utility especially in the any water, snow or dessert is second to none.

I personally went 5 digit but otherwise I totally agree with OP's opinion.

And I confirm that one can get used to the additional weight (well at least for a 5 digit).

I'm so used to the PM weight that I find my SS oyster watches surprisingly light ...

Last point: even with a YG, I still love my SS ones and frequently alternate.

I recently made the switch to the dark side, I still love my SS watches but there is definitely something special about PM that you can't explain until its on your wrist

Agree one thousand percent. People who ask why PM when you can go SS for a fraction of the cost do not understand PM (or can't afford it. Just being honest.)

Its a matter of personal preference. That said, wearing a full Everrose gold Rolex is a statement watch. I went to 2 conferences in Las Vegas in the last few months, first wearing said rose gold Daytona and the second wearing a new steel Batman 2.0. Several people commented on the Batman, no one on the gold watt have.

Maybe place specific because in places like Vegas, South Beach etc so many people have gold watches and high end cars that no one notices them. Go figure.

I'm not a fan of PM (except WG) because of the bling effect (at least in my eyes), but your post makes me take a second hard look on golds.

For me, SS only. PM is not really worth it, especially on a Rolex sports piece I feel like I'm just adding jewelry. I'd rather spend the extra cost on a higher end piece, brand, movement etc. If I ever add a PM Rolex it would be a WG DD40.

I have a SS sub and I think it's the best all round beater to dress anyone could want. Legible and indestructible, resists scratching and damage and looks good with anything you could choose to wear. I have quite a few other pieces and recently picked up a white gold Daytona with a Silver racing dial that is mint...still with the green tag on the back! It has the weight, it POPS on my wrist, it is just stunning but I am afraid to wear it in situations where I could ding or damage it because the gold is so soft and damages so easily compared to Rolex Kryptonite steel. So the PM sport watch is really a going out at night/weekend dress watch but since I have quite a few watches to wear that serves a purpose in my collection. If I was looking for a daily wear piece though it would be SS all day long and I am on the list to get a SS Daytona as well (I know....like Casablanca....."they keep waiting.....and waiting....and waiting...." but my dealer is very optimistic and thinks I'll have one soon. ) I just tried on a solid Gold Sub yesterday and it weighs much more than my white gold Daytona. I mean it's a beast. Walk with a limp heavy. Wear that for 3 years and your left arm will be longer than your right! (just kidding but a tank it was surely)

Yes it is worth it to me. You have a great two watch collection that could last a lifetime and then some.
