Instant? My take is that the whole instant communication thing robs people of their focus and being. Say you are solving the worlds problems or enjoying a quiet cup of coffee at a cafe, watching children play in a park across the street.

Your cell phone rings. Typical nonsense call which should have been handled with an email, except someone thinks they are so important and their issue immediately deserves the focus of your attention. They demand instant response. And your moments of bliss, detached from earthly cares as you daydream in a hip café, evaporate.

I've gotten to turning the ringer off after 6pm or 7pm ... and on long drives? Sorry Dad, the ringer was off. I was busy ... contemplating the universe while navigating an empty stretch of US-60 through the New Mexico desert.

And I've told him, flat out, "Give it a try. Turn your phone off".
