Buy and hold is a great strategy but if you don't think the market can go down 40 percent from here you haven't been doing this long enough. It's simple retracement.

Any asset goes up over time except the value of a dollar or a commodity.

It usually goes down when you least expect it for a reason you couldbt anticipate. With margin debt at all time highs it only has one place to go if something causes a trigger. Also cash invested is at all time highs meaning very few big names have dry powder. They are simply hedging with options and short positions.

I'll give you an easy way to make money simply short any 3x leveraged fund when rsi is overbought. It always falls.
The flip side to Buy and Hold is the exact opposite. Buy random stocks every month in an Index, say S&P 500, and merely adjust for volatility and risk using a risk parity model based on ATR. To reduce on huge drawdowns you can have a no buy rule based on any down trending moving average indicator on the Index to protect you from Bear markets. This has been shown to far outperform any Index over time.

Theoretical exercise really as no one can seriously trade this way, but could be a useful last resort if all other systems and strategies have failed.

To cut my losses on my dividend stocks, I sold out of NAT (a shipping stock) at a loss, and cut in half my positions in GE and PSEC (a BDC). I added to some utilities I own and a BDC (MAIN) at a decent, but not great, price. Such is life. Otherwise hoarding cash for a correction.

Talking stocks, trading, and investing in general

Hey guys, we don't have to always guess on what the market is going to do. I just follow simple rules and follow trends. Most important thing is I am not guessing with my money, I go long when the market is going up and switch to short (or inverse etfs) when markets going down. I follow a proven system and here is an example from 3/6/09...

Yes, the best way is for a Buy and Hold Value/Slow growth investor to only buy during bull markets, when the S&P is trading above its 200 day moving average and to sell as soon as it falls below, signifying a bear market. You don't even have to short during those times if that is not your thing, just wait. In the US you don't have spread betting so it's not so simple to place down bets.

You don't have to worry about predicting the market and trying to buy on corrections and pullbacks, but then that is a bit more fun and makes you more of a medium term investor.

I have been thinking the same thing on TWTR anyone else?

With all the recent tweeting on a national scale, I've thought the same. I think you'll be there for a while before the $$ comes rolling in though.

I wouldn't touch it unless if falls below $10. Even then, it may be a bad buy

It's gone very quiet here. So, is anyone expecting a major market correction tomorrow? (I thought a blunt question might bring about some response, but apologies if a bit crude.)

Nothing is going to happen. The market doesn't care about Trump, North Korea or pretty much anything. It's going to take something big to shake loose this complacency.

Just started my IRA Roth and funded it with $5,500.
Any recommendations for stocks suitable for a high risk tolerance IRA ?
