Slate WG 5146

Hi guys, I'm hoping you can help.
Looking to purchase a Patek WG 5146 with slate dial.
I am hoping that this will be a do-able daily.
Some people dislike the busy dial but for me and my eyes, it really works.
I am aware that PP changed from rhodium plated WG to their own proprietary Grey gold some time around 2006/2007 so am interested in one of the later models in the hope that the case will retain its luster for longer.
Is there anything else I should be aware of with this model and what should I be looking to pay for a full set?
I just missed out on one for £20K which I thought was a bloody good deal. The case had a few scuffs, which I dont mind, as it allows me to wear it more rather than be kept in the safe. After all, its intended purpose is as a daily.
Not a big concern but also curious as to how people think this model will fair over the long term in terms of holding it value.
All the best,
Carl

Hi, no real experience with it but it's a discreet, traditional-looking watch that several forum members possess and appreciate very much from what I read. It seems that you've quite well studied the subject (especially the solid white gold vs plating issue) and I don't know what I could add.

From C24 prices, it seems that the 5205G grey dial is close from the 5146G grey prices (but much higher than the 20K you mentioned). The 5205 is an interesting Annual Calendar alternative (+1mm in width, close in thickness).

It seems to sing to you hence I think it's what matters most :)

Always go for the one that sing to you the most. I think the market price for 5146g should be around $35k.

5205g or 5205r are more modern and the price will be a lot higher.

Its funny you should say that, the piece was reserved for a client and the dealer had on a slate WG 5205 and he asked "what about this?" I politely declined and said it wasnt for me. Although I love the lugs it just doesnt 'sing' to me as the 5146 does and I even think it looks less modern.

As it happens, it appears to now be available.

Im not sure what to do. I plan to keep it so not too fussed about resale as long as I can get into it cheaply. Hmmmm, are box and papers really worth an extra £10K?!
My only concern is that PP no longer issue extracts. Could it be stolen?
What are your thoughts?

Wow, that seems like a very good price, I think you still can bargain a bit more too. Are you in Thailand? You can go to local shop in Bangkok to verify the authenticity or send in for service with Patek in Bangkok.

Love the 5146g, own one from 2019 and it’s really a beautifully classically proportioned dial with real Patek DNA.

I put mine on a grey strap.

Is it just me or does that retailers website not look legit?

You should be paying mid to upper mid 30s for a nice example.

Sorry not a great photo

They're legit. Known him for yonks. Just a really bad website and he does most of his business through Line. Which I dislike as well.
Nice, this would be going straight onto navy alligator for sure!

Hence the dilemma. I know I could get it for less but I would need to check a few things first.

Even you know that it's authentic but you don't know for sure that it isn't a stolen watch.

I like the 5146 but found the numbers a bit large. The platinum with slate dial and baton numbers is perfect.

This is it and where all the hassle begins and what I meant when I said I would have to check a few things first.
No longer get an extract but would take too long if they still did it anyway.
A case of checking watch register etc or do PP have a stolen database (you could check quickly at any PP AD)? Again, thats only if it was reported.
Regardless of wether there was a full set, paperwork or not I suppose you would be facing the same problem. So, I guess it comes down to the old adage, buy the seller not the watch.

What I really should be asking is what comeback would anyone have if it turned out a watch was stolen? Receipt as proof and back to dealer for a refund?!

I suppose these are all the pitfalls and headaches of buying grey. Sometimes its a blessing, others a curse. Depends how much you want the piece.

Continue the search or use it to my advantage and purchase said piece? Hmmmmm...

Interesting. So, how many of both, roughly, and whats your source?

For me I prefer the Arabic but I like your thinking.

Thanks.

When buying pre-owned, there are several potential problems as mentioned above.

As to why a watch is being sold quite a bit below market price, there are a few possibilities. Someone mentioned stolen watch above. Other reasons may include the watch is on consignment and the owner needs cash quickly. Also the watch may not have original parts, namely the buckle or deployment clasp (as no photos online on their website). Of course no box and papers lower the price. Also coming into play is provenance. The watch may have has damage in the past and has significant repair and you wouldn't know if it was repaired by Patek or by third party watchmakers.

Best of luck in your decision

It’s a lovely watch. I got mine 2 years ago. The slate dial makes it more modern while the watch is still a classic Patek. It can definitely be a daily, and you ca dress it down with different straps.

One thing to look for it the type of buckle. I think the oldest ones came with just pin buckle but they changed to a deployment with pin like bucket since the 2000s. However, the newer ones like in the last 10 years or so comes with the Patek Calatrava-cross deployment. That’s a good way of telling if it’s a newer watch.

I have no input on your concerns of its origin. It’s just meet, but for this type of watch, I won’t buy it without papers or extract unless you know the buyer well.

I had both the slate and creamy dial of this 5146G model. I thought the cream dial was easier to read. Either way, I loved this model. I found the balance is just right. I sold them as I didn’t get to wear them often enough. You won’t be disappointed as a daily.
