16202 Winding Feels Sandy

Hi all. When I wind, it feels sandy like I’m grinding coffee. Is this normal?

Yes, mine feels the same. Very different than my other RO's.

I see posts like this pretty often. Does it feel like that if it needs wound (as in when it's out of power) or just after it has been worn and you decide to wind it?
That's how I can tell my watches are fully wound. That gritty feeling is the spring slipping in the barrel so it doesn't break.

Same. It winds rough from the start, at zero power. It gets smoother after 15th or so wind.

If you wind very very slowly, it goes smoothly. At regular winding speed, it’s “bumpy”. (Not continuously bumpy, but a bump every 2 rotations).

My guess is because the crown is octagonal shaped, my winding pressure/grip isn’t maintained. The edges of the crown dug more into my skin and creates an imbalanced pressure. I’m not sure if the “skipping” is generated from the watch or generated from my fingers.

Try this. Very slowly wind the watch with very little pressure on crown, and see if the “skipping”, “coffee grind” issue appears. It went away for me.

Interesting. Decided to wear mine this morning, had to wind it as it was dead, but it was a smooth process from the start.

My 16202 does not feel like that at all when I’m winding it. Actually, when I first got the watch, the winding was so smooth that I thought something might be wrong. I can neither feel the movement winding through the crown, nor can I hear it winding when I hold it up to my ear.

I finally realized it was indeed winding by flipping the watch over to see the gears turning through the sapphire case back while turning the crown.

Forgot about this thread. It turns out the grindy wind was not normal. Mine stopped holding power reserve. Sent it into Clearwater a month ago and just got it back this week. Winds much smoother now and holding power reserve.

Not 16202 but my 15202 also had issues. I had it serviced just about 4 years ago and since the pandemic, it hasn't really gotten much wrist time. I did keep it on the winder so I never really had to wind it up and hadn't been paying too much attention to it. Lately, when I did have to wind it up, the winding was very grindy and it was to the point where I would just have to hold the crown and turn the watch around it. Eventually, the watch was stopping even when on the winder so I took it in to the dealer and they confirmed that the oils had dried up and there was dust in the movement so a service was necessary.

If you are having grinding/sandy winding, I wouldn't assume that it is normal and take it to the service center to have them take a look at it.
