Location wise, given that it is a Thursday I would knock a few places off the list - Campbell Apartment will be packed, as will be Standard Grill and Dead Rabbit will be hit or miss. Little Branch is fine right at 7:00 but by 9:00 it will be jammed. No food also but great cocktails. Pegu Club on Houston does not get busy until later and great cocktails and decent food. The only downside to the current suggestion is the location. Pain to get to the far east side. EN Brasserie in the West Village has a nice little bar area with cocktails and Japanese whiskey. I can try an come up with some more options or we just go to BB and deal with the location.

I'm open to other suggestions. As I've noted I'm not the most familiar with the area. I think it makes sense to just pick something and put it in place sooner rather than later. So if anyone wants to keep looking, we can do so. I would ask anyone interested in attending to google some of the places mentioned and add input.

FYI for those that are unaware, i don't see it being mentioned, Bar and Books is a Cigar Bar.
i believe the set up at the 1st ave location is bar in the front, smoking lounge separate in the rear.

Yes there is a non smoking section in the front. Then there is a separate section that is a cigar bar. Here's an excerpt from their page:

There is no smoking in the Main area, so no worries for those that might not be happy smoke. The other 2 locations have smoking in the main area, but @ Beekman smoking is totally separate with a sort of separate entrance and menu.
