I'm not a fan of the crappy quartz watches from the 70's and 80's, but I'm a huge fan of my 6309-7290 diver, and my World Time auto from the late 60's. Both have been overhauled and run/look like new. When my wife was cleaning out a desk at her parent's house, she found a bandless Seiko auto from the 80's. I gave it a good shake, cleaned the case, put a Seiko band on it and it runs great. Few other makers would be able to sit in a drawer for 30 years and run like new when shaken.

Seiko SKX009 was my first automatic watch, EVER. I shortly after got the 007. I swapped the bracelets for SELs and would just stare at them for hours on end.

A Soldier I work with loved my SD, however, was short on the cash. I pointed him in the direction of a Seiko 5, 50 Fathoms homage piece, and he now calls my Rolex a piece of crap. When we work together I find myself staring at his watch way too often.

Seiko, due to its military history (the Navy still issues them out), remains a true winner in my book.

I don't think there's any question Seiko makes a great watch...

Seiko makes nice watches for sure, but would I take one over a Rolex? No, never.

I can't compare the two, but I'm a big fan of the Seiko brand. Last year my wife gave me a SKX009. I put a SEL band on it and wear it often. Keeps perfect time, too!

I've owned a few Seikos in my days. My wife has an SKX009. No doubt they make great watches. No doubt at all.

To vote a normal Seiko over Rolex though... Nah. Not even close.

The Grand Seiko does come close though. Still the vote goes to Rolex IMHO.

Ultimately, like I mentioned to Ethan (WolfMan), this is a Rolex forum so no one here is going to "pick" a Seiko over a Rolex. I think however the article was trying to point that if you want a cool watch, and you want to save $7,700 the Seiko is a good way to go.

If handed the option of having a free Submariner or a free entry level Seiko diver, no one in their right mind would pick the Seiko.

Agreed. I don't think anybody can disagree with that.

I hope I don't get too much crap for this, but I like to think of Seiko as the Toyota of the watch world. Like Toyota, Seiko is a company that has been around for a long time and builds functional and reliable watches. Seiko cannot compare with high end swiss watches, but Grand Seiko can. I like to think of Grand Seiko as the Lexus of the watch world.

Good point, but if saving money is the concern, I'd still take my Marathon GSAR over any Seiko except for the Grand Seiko. If not Marathon, I can think of a few others that give Seiko a run for their money. I absolutely LOVE the SKX009, but it feels like a cheap dime store toy (all though it's not) compared to the Marathon. Even the Marathon does not feel as well built as the Rolex...

<---- I guess where I am going, that there IS no comparison between the average Seiko and Rolex. Grand Seiko, THAT warrants a conversation. Again, no Seiko bashing. They are simply a different breed. They both tell time... It's more than that.

My SKX gets just as much wrist time as any of my Rolex have. I recommend that watch to everybody.

Comparing to Rolex is a worthless exercise. What I don't get is all these people wearing these $700 Shinola quartz and thinking they have a fine timepiece. I almost want to give them my SKX and hope they see the light.

I like Rolex, Seiko, Casio, etc. But I know which ones are better constructed. They cost more for a reason.

Buy quality, cry once. Buy cheap, cry again and again.

I paid $90 for my SKX779 eight years ago and $150 for my SRP307 a few months ago. I'm only crying tears of joy They're fun, reliable and comfortable watches

My first automatic watch was a Seiko 5. Twenty-two years later, I pick it up, give it a couple of shakes, the movement fires up and it keeps perfect time. Seikos do not disappoint! (Even if I prefer my Rolexes).

I have a similar story.

Father-in-law gave me an old hi-beat Lordmatic that had never been serviced since he owned it. The date was stuck (still rolled-over when the hands struck twelve but you couldn't manually adjust) but i'll be damned if it wasn't within COSC still.

I'd leave it open for debate on the higher-end Prospex line as well with the exception for their bracelets. Then again, you could compare them to older Rolex oysters in this case... The SBDX001 is a superbly finished watch IMHO, and while quite large, I'm anxiously eyeing the new Spring Drive Tuna SBDB009 which should retail for $3900.

I'm sure that guy is an expert in something, though 70's disco music and "biker" bars more so than anything else.

Hey guys. I'm a Rolex owner but have worn my seiko as a young military diver and ever since. If I was headed out on a mission tomorrow it's the watch I'd reach for first. Although I love my suunto and gshock for field work as well. So here's the question. Can anyone recommend a good tech to refirb my seiko? Any anyone have reccos on folks who mod them. Can't change my original 34 year old one, but might think about pimping another one I pick up. Thanks guys.

The Seikos are really bang for your buck! What you said are spot on - and furthermore the high-end Seiko watches are truly remarkable as well!

This guy has one of mine now that he's modding. He did something for me on another Seiko I have. His work is very good, prices are reasonable and his communication is excellent.

http://www.motorcitywatchworks.com/

I bought my parts from here. You can navigate around with the index on the left side of the page. You can buy watches already done from him or just parts. His communication is fantastic also.

Here's another source for parts. They sell movements for $50 so chances are it's cheaper than doing a service.

I live in Vegas and usually I associate Rolex with douche bag from California. Plus I wanted the original so I went with Blancpain. On the other hand I found myself sitting next to Mike Thorton on a plane bound for Dallas and he was wearing a GMT. But when you're a genuine walking talking badass of the first order you can wear whatever watch you want.
