Ideal Movement to Case proportions

I am not a WIS and thus quite perplexed when many bemoan the size of many of PP calibres to the diameter of the case size. In particular the 5524 and 5196 and sometimes even 5327. I was wondering if there is some sort of "golden rule" or is it just watch snobbery? I thought I should compare some models based on case and size of movement and here is what I discovered:

5524 : 42 mm x 31 mm (324) = 74%
5327 : 39 mm x 27.5 mm (240Q) = 70.5%
5196P: 37 mm x 21.9 mm (215PS) = 59%
5170 : 39.4 mm x 29.6 mm = 75%

Considering PP designed a new movement for the 5170 it would stand to reason that 75% would seem to be the magic number. Why is the 5524 criticized so much for a case size of similar proportions?

In fact AP actually increased the size of the movement (5134) to accommodate the larger 41 mm diameter of the RO Perpetual (70%) and if they increased the size and only got to 70% it proves somebody elses aesthetic is different. The AP Diver is even worse at 42 mm case and 26.6 mm movement (63%) and I don't here as many AP owners bemoan the size of movements versus PP.

Then we have the PP fan favourites;

5070 : 42 mm x 27.5 mm (CH 27-70) = 65%
5970 : 40 mm x 27.5 mm (310) = 68%

We tend to overlook the movement sizes in the above based purely on nostalgia knowing full well the movements were designed for a case that was some 4 mm smaller (76.38%)in the case of the 5970 and 6 mm for the 5070.

The Voutuilainen Vingt 8 is a 39 mm x 30 mm = 76.9% proportion.

Maybe we just find a reason to criticize a watch no matter how beautiful it is... or are their magic proportions that true WIS look out for?

Wow.

And I just I thought the script on some sub dials is too big.

The movement in the 5170 actually debuted in a ladies watch. I don’t know what the right proportion is, but look at the case back and if it’s pleasing to the eye then it’s ok. Patek can also disguise when a movement is too small, like they did with the 5070, both on the dial side and case back.

I am more focused on the proportion of dial to case.
