Would you rather? (Black Friday Edition)

Given supply and demand, would you rather pay existing MSRP for watches while having to wait to get allocated, or have MSRPs double or triple to the demand of today for a watch and walk into an AD to buy whatever you want?

Obviously I'd rather have prices triple and be able to walk in to the AD and buy my grail... a 36mm two tone datejust

I would absolutely love to see a double or triple in msrp. I think it would be hysterical. VC, PP, and AP would be the winners as well as omega.

Don’t forget I’m sure Rolex sells more watches at msrp then they do at these grey prices. They would lose that customer base at msrp. Omega and other brands like Grand Seiko would probably pick up the customer base left behind by Rolex. And brands priced in the category as Rolex would love it because when comparing a Rolex to the holy trinity rolex loses all day long

I don’t think a change in price would alter the demand we are seeing. The factors would remain methinks.

i kinda like things just the way they are. (yeah, i know, minority viewpoint.) which is essentially a combo of your two options.

if i feel like waiting for something at msrp, i can wait away. but if i feel like having something new on my wrist tomorrow, i'm happy to pay the market price premium.

could care less about the AD experience, so i factor that out of my equation. and i would never hope for an MSRP increase which would only drive the secondary markets higher.

I’d rather wait and buy at msrp from an AD. If I wanted to pay triple i would just buy from a pre-owned trusted seller.

I'm happy to wait, as I am at present, but it is very unlikely I will buy if for "existing MSRP". By the time I get it there will have been multiple price increases.

If you would rather pay multiples of today's MSRP in return for getting the watch immediately, that's what the grey market is for.

I'd rather pay for the watch at MSRP, but I'd also need to have a fair, transparent, and global policy, whatever that is. An online system telling me where I am in the queue, and an estimated time to wait would alleviate a lot of the hysterical FOMO buying.

Not sure I understand the difference. You can already pay 2-3x MSRP and get whatever you want right now.

True - if MSRP is x2 or X3, the grey market then would be x4 or x5+; same issue, just increased magnitude.

Not necessarily, since people would prefer paying for a new watch, from an AD, without fear of it being fake, with a great warranty and assurance everything is legit.

Premise was to raise MSRP to the level where one can " walk into an AD to buy whatever you want?". If that level is reached, the grey market will obviously be at the level where it is for other readily available goods, i.e., well below MSRP.

Exactly this.

It's a want, not a need.

Not anxious to spend more on Rolex watches so waiting is just fine. Actually fine either way.

Back to being a general retail store where if you can afford the price you walk out with what you want.
