Why does everybody want a panda 116500?

Tried a brand new one in person the other day, and while it was quite nice, I really can’t understand why the white dial 116500 is so much coveted to the point of being almost 3x retail price.

I found the dial a bit busy and I would have preferred black subdial hands, but in general it personally felt less nice than the 116520, and infinitely less charmy than a 6263 they had next to it (ok that’s on a different price range, but it was really perfect and timeless compared to it).

Happy to hear your reasons guys!

Was offered the black dial. Nice watch actually. Just doesn’t fit my taste. Prefer the PM/TT variants as they are far more vibrant and interesting to me.

Most today like it because of its status as a highly coveted watch which entails rapid value appreciation.

Other reasons people like it includes its heritage, association with a legend, or just simply for what it is, a robust sport chronograph.

It is a severely over-hyped item with a massive amount of the 'FOMO' crowd chasing it.
<Fear Of Missing Out.>
It is all a bunch of asininity, in my opinion.
It is just another watch. And not even all that readable at a glance.
But to each their own desires.

I… like how it looks. The contrast between the black bezel and the white dial, and then the subdials just looks really neat to me. I’d get it at once if it was a USD 500 off brand with a Miyota movement. Anybody else?
Wouldn’t spend 35 grand on it though.

I like Daytonas … I think they are good looking watches.
I actually prefer the look of the 116500 Black Dial, but since I already have a Black Submariner, I would like to get the White Dial version.

They are extremely hard to get and if you can acquire one from an AD then it’s quite the accomplishment. IMO

I chose the black dial over white. White dial does nothing for me (okay, but I’ll take one if you’re giving one away!).

Reminds me of my first watch, my mother purchased it for me as a gift. Something she picked up at Macys probably, Nautica chrono watch white face with some gold subdials. Probably cost her 75 bucks back then and I wore that watch growing up so much it literally rotted away on my wrist. Rolex was never part of my vocabulary back then but all I could afford and a memorable part of my childhood that started my watch passion.

Think of my amazing mother when I wear it and it’s a part of my special occasions now today. It’s a beautiful watch and something I hope a grandchild will cherish someday down the road. To each their own but to me it’s perfect.

These are essentially "limited edition" Rolexes, without being labelled as so. The limited production and high demand has made it super popular, like a heirloom piece some would say.

The watch itself is also great, IMO for a chronograph the dial isn't busy at all, it doesn't even have a date complication. The sizing is also great, and the style is pretty unique out of the entire Rolex lineup.

The watch is just beautiful. I tried to baby mine, but I keep wearing it. It’s the first thing I pick out of my collection.

This is all about personal tastes, and we know how much those can vary. I truly love the Daytona, having been my first true love with Rolex. I will always have this piece in as many SS iterations as I can.

Limited production? It’s mass produced.

It's a good looking watch. But there's lots of good looking watches. Everyone wants what everyone else can't have I guess. It's pretty sad.

Google “economic bubble”.

It’s not that people like the watch itself, it’s because they know that a lot of other people would be impressed by it. Ie it allows them to post on this forum about their new Daytona as a subtle way to brag about their VIP status at the AD and get some enjoyment from seeing other envy them.

I also chose the black dial over the white, I think it looks more classic.

People want it because they can't get it. The harder something is to get, the more people want it despite whether they really like it. I never really liked the design with the oversized bezel on a relatively small watch case (technically 38.58mm). I prefer the more traditionally designed Chronograph with the narrower bezel. The White Dial is also technically not a Panda with just the black rings.

I could have sworn that the two resemble each other, a lot.

Do you prefer the finish and hollow bracelet on the 6263 the latter of which relatively more easily stretch? The cheaper made aluminum bezel that easily scratches? The clasp? Finish of the dial?

You're not a fan of the modern because so many others are fans, and overwhelming majority of enthusiasts would love to have one?

Both gorgeous watches. The 500LN is one of the most gorgeous stainless steel watches IMO.

Happy Thanksgiving!

each to their own but Daytona just doesn't do it for me, only reason I ever looked into them was due to hype, without that I wouldn't give a second look was it not for the obvious gains to be had resale ...

Correct, but the demand far outweighs the production. Most SS sport Rolex watches have long been considered Limited Editions without the label.

You have to look at the supply/demand ratio to gauge whether the watch is scarce, you cant simply look at production numbers without knowing the demand. A limited edition for example from Oris that no one is buying is in less demand than a SS Sport Rolex that everyone wants, even if the production of the Rolex is in larger quantities.
