The earlier 116520 however suites the Black dial better IMO.

I agree with your assessment. Although, it’s all personal taste. In my book, can’t go wrong with “any” Daytona!

Why do people want the white dial Daytona?

It's simple really -

Some people genuinely like it, and prefer it over the black dial version (or indeed any other watch) so they want to own it. These people I salute, as they're buying for the right reason.

Other people however (the majority of people these days it seems) like to either believe in never-ending prices, "investments", "hard to get" etc, etc, or they just HAVE to have whatever social media tells them they should own, so OBVIOUSLY they want the one that they're told is the one to have. These people I hope will move on to the "next big thing" asap.

But, if those investment folks leave, the pre-owned prices will plummet. I wonder if anybody will be actually be happy if that happens.

I prefer the black dial but if I were to be offered a white dial from an AD I wouldn't turn it down..

In all honesty I personally couldn't care less if pre-owned prices plummet. I buy Rolex watches simply because I like them and because I like wearing them; their monetary value once I own them means absolutely nothing to me. If Rolex prices dropped to Invicta levels I'd still like them just as much as if they were at Patek levels.

I know I shouldn't let it bother me, but I'm a horology fan and have been for decades, so I find the obsession with investment and resale value really cheapens the brand somehow. JMO.

Because it’s the second best piece in the Rolex catalog, only behind the black dial version :-)

I didn't!

White dial ceramic bezel is extremely photogenic.

Black dial ceramic bezel looks bigger.

Once you have them side by side in the flesh, that's the only time you can really compare the two. In pics, the black dial just cant compete!

Doesn't really matter which one you go for, you choose the one you want... right???

Here's my choice:

Well, I don’t want it. And have no interest in any Daytona. I don’t get it. It’s busy and illegible and it’s claim to fame is that a famous Hollywood make-bleibe person wore one. 🤷

I like it. I got mine at MSRP. It is a great watch at MSRP. I would pass on it at anything over MSRP. At current market prices there are so many other watches new or vintage, Rolex or others that would get my money. I would prefer a Zenith Daytona or older vintage over my white DaytonaC though...

I've had two Daytonas. Fits me great, classic beauty, but I could never easily read the time.

I tend to agree with M J B. I've owned a black dial 116520 and now a 116500. They fit my small wrist, but I find them very hard to read. I went to see the latest 007 movie last night and tried to read time on my watch during the movie and ended up having to look at my phone. I have a Seadweller, Sub and GMTII and all are far more capable of telling the time than my Daytona. I feel a white dial version would have some advantage over the black.

Is the modern Daytona more hyped than a 6239 Exotic Dial? After all, Paul Newman’s sold for $17+ Million.

If the OP’s question is about the white dial version of the 500, I certainly don’t want one unless I could buy one to sell at a big profit!

I much prefer the black dial version of the 500 and I prefer the 16520 and 116520 versions over the 500 version as well.

16520 is still the king……larger than the 4 digits but hasn’t been made into jewelry like the 116500

Who cares, I got what I always wanted, when I wanted it. I'll wait on my second from my friendly local AD.

Bingo! No downside for me, as I will pass it on.

The upside is constant. When I take it out of the case every day and put it on, whenever I look at it and when I remember the elation of marking a milestone by being able to finally get one of the few "grails" on my list, one that predated the price rise.

I wanted one for a few reasons. First of all it's a pure joy to look at on the wrist. The polishing and white dial pop. Secondly the 4130 chronograph movement itself is a modern marvel engineering with fewer parts I believe than any other chronograph of this size. Thirdly it's a steel Daytona so the value will always continue to climb. Expect this to be in the high five figures one day if not six. Its a bad ass piece for those with the connections to get one at retail. I am lucky and I have put in the time. Thank you for helping me get this piece if you are reading this you know who you are.
