I am still a bit confused. Did someone hand the presenter the wrong envelope? He said that inside it said emma for best actress or something?

I figured. The look on the presenting actors face when he announced made him look a bit senile so I can't blame him for getting to the mic to explain.

here is video, from Yahoo site:
https://www.yahoo.com/news/moonlight...060815241.html

..."The Academy Awards ended in dramatic fashion when screen legends Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly crowned La La Land the year’s Best Picture.
Moments later though, it emerged that the actual winner was Moonlight, a dramatic reversal that played out in equally dramatic fashion."

Hadn't best actress already been given out, so that envelope already had been opened?

Yep - two copies of every envelope are created. Emma Stone had already been awarded Best Actress for La La Land.

Two accountants handle the separate stack of envelopes - one on either side backstage. They hand the envelope to the presenter just as they are announced to go on stage.

Clearly, the accountant with Warren Beaty & Faye Dunnaway had not discarded the extra Best Actress envelope (because the one that was already used was given by the counterpart on the other side). So Beatty goes on stage with wrong envelope for Best Picture.

He stumbled around verbally and then showed it to Dunnaway who promptly announced La La Land. She missed fact that the card also said Emma Stone (but in the spirit of fairness, she was on the spot not knowing why Beatty was sputtering).

It looked a real amateur church hall set-up with the parish dramatic society taking part!

[SARCASM]I wonder if the distraught actors will have handed back their $100,000 swag bags in disgust because of their ruined night, it must have been devastating for them, how horrible, the trauma will stay with them for the rest of their lives. [/SARCASM]

Beatty obviously thought that something was wrong and he really should have stopped and verified the envelopes instead of proceeding. It would have been mildly embarrassing but nothing compared to the way it played out. A shame for Kimmel, who was a pretty good host overall.

The category is printed on the cards. But you can't expect Beatty to read "Best Actress" and connect the dots to know he got the wrong envelope. He swagged it and proved that basic analytical skill is not a prerequisite of stardom.

PWC is supposed to make it foolproof so that even a drug addled movie star can get it right. Clearly, PWC created a better fool to beat their foolproof process.

If he knew something was wrong, they must also verbally tell the presenters before they go onstage to present the award.

I think the whole stunt was thought up by Steve Harvey to take the crown of biggest awards show screwup away from him.

Will PWC lose any big accounts over this?

I guarantee next year the envelopes will have the category printed on BOTH sides.

Blunders will inevitably occur. No big deal as the entertainment media and general public seem more concerned with what 'fashion house' the women in attendance are wearing. Besides, the anointed 'winners' aren't always the 'best in show' anyway. Just chalk it up to human error and move on.

They hired a new printer for the envelopes this year...embossed gold on an all red background. The old printer has a story out on how legible their previous envelopes were. I bet they go back to the old supplier, or at least the old style.
