Rolex Submariner (116610LN) Sound When Shaking?

Hey guys,

Just got my new Rolex Submariner Ceramic! Looks beautiful. Not sure if this is an issue but, I noticed that when I shook the watch there is a sound like there is something loose inside. Like a screw shaking around. I put the crown in 3rd position to adjust the time to make sure I wasn't confusing it with the ticking sound. Is there something wrong with this Sub-C or is this something common with all Subs? First watch so any input would be greatly appreciated!

There really shouldn't be any noticeable noises coming from your watch, unless you hold it to your ear.

There have been cases reported of this and the experts point to the rotor screw coming loose or something similar.

Pull the stem out all the way to hack the movement and take it to a watchmaker ASAP.

When I shake my watch, I do hear a sound, but I thought it was just the winding of the watch?

Rolex rotors are extremely quiet, but I guess there are those who have really good hearing.

I don't, however.

Most others attest to the same thing and I presume they are not all deaf.

If something is rattling around in the case, that's not a good thing and it should be checked, but that is at the discretion of the owner.

First off, remove the bracelet (or have a tech do so if you aren't comfortable doing it). The sound you hear now may just be the springbars sliding slightly against the endlink housing.

With the bracelet off, you can then get the watch between thumb and forefinger and make a much more accurate assessment about the noise you hear. At this point, you should hear none. If you do, the issue might be due to a loose rotor or rotor bridge--in either case, the fix should be straightforward for a good watchmaker, or Rolex if you're under warranty.

I had to put my ear against the back of the watch to hear it...otherwise it's pretty quiet.

Exactly! Most likely the bracelet.

First of all do not worry! About 3 weeks ago I made an almost identical post regarding hearing a metallic click-click sound coming from inside my GMTiic when I shook the watch.

Worried I went to my A.D where the managers 16610 lv made the same noise when shaken... Not 100% convinced I shook another brand new GMT off the shelf and the new Explorer 216570 which both made identical sounds... Verdict = some of us have very good ears!

We also removed the bracelet to eliminate this possibility.
Relax it's normal from what I've seen.

I always attributed that sound of a slight "click" to the bracelet of my SubC.

Great to hear guys. Thanks for the feedback. I am going to double check in a few weeks when I make it back to the AD but seems like it's normal from what I've heard. Any other Sub-C owners want to chime in/test it out on their subs?

That's the best thing to do then your mind will be at ease, lots of people have different definitions of what could be meant by a noise coming from inside your watch but if the noise you describe is the metallic "click" I referred to then I'm sure you'll hear more at your A.D which are the same.

Good luck

X2.Plus there is no need to shake the watch if it stops just wind it by the crown, there will be some slight rotor sound especially if you shake while close to ear.

Thanks for this old thread, guys!

I recently bought my first Rolex, a brand new 114060 Submariner and have also noticed the “click-click” sound when close to my ear in a quiet room. I tried another one at the AD and heard a similar click sound. (However the store isn’t exactly a quiet room) So I do believe it is a normal characteristic of the rotor and or winding mechanism.

I can also hear the rotor “settle down” as it rocks back and forth on the axel, but only very close to my ear in a very quiet room when I gently shake the watch. I suppose this is normal too? Thoughts anybody? I hear NOTHING at arm’s length, other than maybe the bracelet a little.

I have very good hearing, and attribute this fact to why I became so concerned about whether the sounds I was hearing were normal. I’ve read many people say that a Rolex jeweled sleeve bushing should be “silent,” but I just think it depends on your hearing. It makes sense that ANY mechanical should make some noise if you listen carefully. My Submariner is very quiet indeed, just not silent.
