I would love to see this happen.

I would buy it in a heartbeat and would likely be my end all be all watch.

I wouldn’t call it awful, or silly, but I’m not sure I’d buy one. The name ‘Rolex’ means, to me, reliable, durable high end mechanical watches. That’s what I want when I buy the brand.

The video is first class, as is the concept. If Rolex wanted to break into the under 30 market with a storm, this might just do it. I don't think Rolex would do this, but we'll see.

Digital watch face but it still has to have the cyclops.

I’d leave the disposable smartwatches to Samsung and Apple.

I think it is cool but do not want to charge my Rolex. Don’t need another gadget to charge. Like the idea and looks awesome especially compared to other smart watches.

At first I thought "No buzzsaw bezel, no sale ", but then I thought "If with all that fancypants electronic-lighting they include a decent adjustable spot-to-flood flashlight, I'm getting one!".

So for me, it comes down to being able to see stuff in the dark using it. A general purpose wrist-flashlight one could dial up at will and not have to hold would be pretty handy in all sorts of situations from normal people to lone ranger government assassins who presumably spend a large proportion of their time at work sneaking around in the dark. Speaking of which, if Q had actually been worth a s*** he would have thought to incorporate this most basic of superspy tools in his watch modifications instead of tinkering around with one-off gizmos that only get used once per mission.

I wouldn't touch that with a ten-foot pole.

That would in my judgement be the end of Rolex as we know it.

It is not like the quartz wristwatch revolution, in which Rolex was initially a big player in research and development.

A smartwatch would be like throwing their hands in the air and surrendering.

There may be plenty of innovations for mechanical and even quartz watches for Rolex to explore, but putting the Rolex name on a "smartwatch" is not one of them

That would be the destruction of the brand. It’s like if Roll Royce decided to make a Prius.

Video is cool, but terrible concept. I just can’t see Rolex breaking into this game. They have a specific brand and a smart watch is not it.

Also smart watches have a much smaller shelf life. A Rolex can last forever. A smart watch is not a forever watch. I do like some features on a smart watch but Rolex is not it.

Apple can’t make a smart watch that is more than mildly interesting and very annoying. There’s no way Rolex will beat them at their own game.

Ferrari has a hybrid. Why not a Rolex smartwatch? I wouldn’t buy it and I initially think it would do harm to the brand but I have to think it will eventually happen.

Not everyone. Unfortunately, some buy Rolex as a display of what they perceive to be wealth.

This

On the concept watch itself, at least the coronet on the winding crown was the right way up but it lost it for me by not having a Glidelock clasp.

Maybe not, but you'd have to play it without even a single small mistake. It would be a hook to get young people into the brand. Then, with time, they could be in a position to buy into a $10k "real", mechanical Rolex. Look at it like Campagnolo's Potenza line. Young people today are into experiences, not things. As they get older I think many will learn appreciation for things that truly last; the digital junk they're growing up with certainly doesn't. They first need to believe in and look forward to having a future. That comes with some years.

If Rolex was in the business of just making as much money as they can, yeah it would be a good play like you describe. Except, from everything I have seen, Rolex doesn’t care about making money. They care about producing whatever they want and doing whatever they want. For them to release a smartwatch would bring in a lot of money, but it would also tarnish their image and values. If they wanted to make a lot of money they could produce thousands of daytonaC’s and ship them out today, they’d make millions. Yet, they don’t because they care more about the appearence of scarcity and exclusivity of Rolex

A flashlight on this watch would be a more useful tool and actually more used as a tool than the average "tool watch" Daytona owner's chrono/tach or "tool watch" case WR ratings deeper than the crush depth of an Ohio-class nuclear submarine.

If they go so far as to release it with PCLs Rolex will be able to design a new, gleaming-white Pro Series watch especially for dentists called The Incisor because they'll be making so much money repairing overly-gnashed and ground-down teeth they won't know what to do with it all except buy more Rolexes. The Incisor will be quickly nicknamed Drilly McDrillface on TRF, which will annoy Padi tremendously.

This is tricky. Obviously a Rolex smart watch would need to be something more than a case with an Android generic module. Serviceability and product life are key aspects that would need to be addressed properly. I have not really looked into the TAG concept but I understood that they started to look into bridging the two worlds (smart and mechanical).

The funny thing is that all Rolex has to do is to limit supply... then everybody will want one!!!
