Is this in fact a glacier dial?

Hi there,

Just got a gorgeous 118239 (plus factory bezel). The dial has a little tint of blue to it - it's more apparent in certain kinds of light. The merchant from whom I purchased it sold it to me as silver (I'm not upset, I like this look) and when I asked about the tint, he said upon further research it appears to be the "glacier dial". I thought the glacier was more blue, but apparently, that's ice blue. I just want to know what I have ... here are a few photos. Does this read as glacier to you? If not, what do we think it is?

Thanks for your help!

It looks like the ice blue dial. That dial is reserved for platinum models, and since your watch is a white gold day date, someone has swapped the dials. I don’t think rolex will service it as is!

Are you sure the model number is 118239?

It doesn’t look that “blue” in person. Almost silver. It’s DEF not as blue as ice blue. This may or may not be the original dial.

That is not the dial for a DD in WG, it's made for the Platinum model. I have the same but with romans instead of diamonds.

I put it in my WG DD because I like that dial and with the fluted bezel it is awesome IMHO.

Here is my watch.

Interesting. Okay, so I knew the bezel was incorrect but not the dial. I quite like the look. Should I care in particular?

Also I’m not going to send it to Rolex anyway as they will take off the bezel and charge me for a white gold fluted one.

So long you stay away from Rolex you are fine. Enjoy your watch whatever people says about it.

Some will scream fake or franken but so long you are happy with it is the only that counts.

Color doesn't look right compared to an original dial.

It is not uncommon to find aftermarket dials (and bezels) especially with diamonds or jewels on Day Dates as well as Datejusts.

More so with older 5 digit references I've found, but those models in particular.

AFAIK that looks like the “glacier” blue... which is more silver than blue.

Rolex changed that to “ice” blue (more blue than glacier) around the time dd2 or platona came out. Nobody seems to be able to confirm exactly when.

Both were only available with platinum Rolex.

Can you take a pic where it looks a little more blue, the last pic is close to OEM but still seems too pale.

Those are as "blue" as they get. In fact, I'd say on the whole it reads silver in most light. The photos make it look more blue. It's interesting.

Took to watchmaker at AD to take a look. He said it's definitely an authentic dial and not aftermarket, but he wasn't sure it was original to the watch nor whether or not it was "glacier". He said it's definitely not ice blue.

Great looking watch. Most likely someone swapped the dial in. No expert on the difference between the "glacier" and "ice blue" dial difference so no help there.

Always liked the work Jocke did on his. Love the fluted bezel with this dial. If you like it, enjoy it and congrats!

Looks almost identical to this one on Bob's that he has labeled as a glacier:

https://www.bobswatches.com/rolex-pl...-day-date.html

Best guess I have is this is a glacier, came off of a Platinum.

Looks fine to me. Depending upon the light, the color changes from a soft blue to silver.

I think it is a « bleu glacier » dial that comes from a platinum Day-Date.
It is beautiful.

Thanks! I know it's not correct to the model, but it has a little body.

I was thinking the same thing. There's no such thing as an aftermarket Rolex-branded dial. Those are called fake Rolex dials.

Well, sort of. I think there's a distinction between an authentic Rolex dial that has been refinished (not by Rolex) and a straight up "fake" dial that was never made by Rolex at all. But Rolex would consider anything modified by another party to be inauthentic. It's sort of a semantic issue.

In this case, I think we've established this is an authentic dial that is not original to this model and that Rolex would require it to be changed on a service. The bezel is the same thing, so it's not upsetting to me. I just get to rock a cool combo and enjoy!

Jocke: The ice blue is beautiful, but the cobalt / bronze dial DD looks terrific as well

OP: Beautiful combo! Am on the hunt for a glacier blue stick dial for my WG DD 18239, this is the look I want!
