Watches your Dad Passed On To You

Hi Everyone - There has been a recent thread about yor Dad's Rolex - How about posting pics or stories of any watch(s) you received from Dad and now treasure.

My Dad died when I was in high school - when I had no clue about watches. Sad to say I don't know if he collected watches - but these 3 are what he had. None valuable from a monetary standpoint - but all priceless to me:

Military Waltham w/ sub seconds dial - with ORD DEPT 127240 stamped on the back - (any guess to age on this one?) Dad has a decorated past, a 22 year Marine with many medals, an aide to Admiral Byrd on one of his Antartica expeditions, fought in Korea, retired as a Major and now rests in Arlington National Cemetary, alongside my Mom - who was also a Marine.
Lord Elgin was his everyday wear
Gruen with the scratched green crystal - would like to know why he bought this interesting looking watch.

Show me your Dad's watches!

Hi,

This is the 6536 that my father passed on to me in 2003. He bought it used for about $1100.- and wore it all the time.
I hardly ever wear it, only on special occasions.

Vintage Seamaster

Dad's watch, passed it on to me-Omega Seamaster... from the 60's, just got it overhauled... probably cost more than the watch itself but I don't care... don't wear it much though... I am looking for a vintage Seamaster 300 to add to the collection

No pics but, a 1940's gold tank style Hamilton, and a 1950's SS Benrus Wristalarm. I've had both overhauled recently and they're on my never sell list.

Here's mine. My Dad got it from a friend. He would NEVER have purchased a Rolex on his own.

My first Post on TRF featured this watch. I am ashamed to admit that I was asking the "what is it / what is it worth?" question we all hate.

Larry was kind enough to help me...Well, at least I became a member in good standing and ended up bitten pretty good by the Rolex bug!!!

My dad passed down to me his father's pocket watch. It's a SS Hamilton. I was hoping that it was worth a bazillion dollars, but its not. However, as someone previously mentioned, its priceless to me...especially after hearing about my grandfather's "colorful" past. If only the watch could talk! Watch is currently in my safe deposit box.

On a slightly related topic, I did the reverse. I passed my black TT Sub to my dad. One of the more memororable days I've shared with him.

I have 2 that my Dad passed to me, well at least my Mum gave them to me after he had passed away.
The first is a Marvin and I believe that it as made in the 1920s:

The 2nd is an Alpina that he "acquired" during the second world war. It was the only watch I ever knew him wearing and so I would say that there was some significance to it knowing my Dad. He passed away before I became interested in watches and so I will never know for sure:

My third watch was given to me after my Grandfather passed away over 30 years ago. It just sat in a drawer for many years until the watch bug bit me. I realised that this Tudor was more than just a tatty old watch. It was presented to him in 1949 after 25 years service at his place of work.

I have had them all serviced. The Tudor dial was virtually unreadable with the lume missing from most of the hands and figures. So, after much thought I had the dial and hands restored sympathetically and I am more than pleased with the result.

The 16 mm straps on the Marvin and the Alpina are cheap and nasty and I would really like to get something of decent quality. The Marvin has a metal loop to attach the strap and the Alpina has fixed spring bars. The straps are attached using the metal staples that you bend over after attaching the straps to the watch. The staples always go green and nasty!! Where can I look to pick up something decent?

If you know any information about any of these watches I would really like to hear about it. Even a link to where I can do the research would be great!

Regards,
Peter

Still miss him every day.......

Dad and I were very close, as boys and men. He was an adventurer at heart, loved the outdoors and particularly the sea. He was an early adopter of SCUBA, taught me, and we had a memorable trip to the Bahama's one year.

Below is his Sub 5513 that he wore as long as I can remember:

Thanks Guys - love the Dad stories.
A Dad, his watch and his son are a special bond that has existed for a century - it is up to us to keep this tradition going strong.

My father passed away recently, he did collect some watches but he was more interested in pocket watches. I do have a few wrist watches that he gave me. When I was young he gave me a Heuer Carrera, 1970s vintage, which is now out for service. Of more interest is a Laco Beobachter Uhr, a very large watch made for the German Luftwaffe and meant to be worn over the sleeve of a flight jacket. I'll try to get a photo up soon.

Here is a picture of the 14K Mathey-Tissot watch that my mother purchased for my father as a 40th birthday gift. I have the watch, original box, warranty paper, hang tag and sales slip. Watch was purchased from S.Klein in New York City on August 16, 1954. My dad passed away in 1965 at the age of 50. I have had it since then, worn occasionally as a dress watch.

Watch - $68.18 plus Federal Excise Tax $6.82 plus New York City Sales Tax of $2.04 for a total of $77.14.
