This is only tangentially related.. but can we talk about ice?

I get a lot of satisfaction having drinks with perfectly clear ice. It just looks better, and as the ice melts there's no "foam".

I used to try boiling water before pouring it into ice trays to prevent bubbles. This decreases the amount of bubbles and cloudiness, but it's nowhere near perfect.

So I did some research and I cannot recommend the "True Cubes Clear Ice Cube Tray" enough. It makes four perfectly clear cubes of ice, 100% of the time so far.

It takes about 24 hours, and it's kind of a pain in the ass to get the cubes out sometimes, but with practice it's not bad.

In my opinion, it's well worth the cost and effort to elevate the whole experience of a nice glass of whisky.

My state doesn't allow hard liquor to be shipped. Total bummer.

I've also heard that distilled water works to create crystal clear ice. I've never tried it.

Doesn't work.

The bubbles are formed from dissolved gases as the water freezes, and gas gets dissolved into the water no matter what you do.

The only way to get clear ice is to freeze a big block from the top down, which pushes the bubbles to the bottom, then only use the top layer.

I just tried this. It helped as the cubes definitely looked better, but it wasn’t clear. And they were a nightmare to get out of the silicone mold.

(See the ORVW pic above.)

You will however get better water in your drink, which may count for something depending on what’s coming out of your tap.

I use the "phantom ice maker" and been pretty happy with it. Warm water works best and about 30 hours in the freezer. I have both the cube and sphere trays.

More expensive than above but very clear ice

As someone who commits the sin of using ice often in my bourbon I focus more on the quality of the water than the clarity of the cube. Ie nice mineral water or spring water that has good taste and importantly is fresh not sitting in the freezer for a month.

I prefer Macallan 18 sherry oak over most- including Macallan 25, or Blanton's

Finally opened this one up. Really enjoying it! I prefer it to the 10 year bourbon, but I’ll take the 10 year rye over both.

Check wine-searcher.com. That's how I research and find some stuff that my state doesn't get allocations of. But beware, you'll be paying secondary "tater" prices for Blanton's online, pretty much anywhere you look.

Musthavemalts.com also gets Blanton's, including Gold and SFTB, on a routine basis, but shipping from the Netherlands is higher. If you get one, try to buy a couple of bottles to offset the cost.

Or, just find something at the store that is better than Blanton's, which is just about everything sitting there, IMO. Don't get me wrong, Blanton's is fine and I have a few bottles of regular, Gold, and SFTB; but it's not worth even the $65 (Non-Age Stated, 93 proof) when you can get Wild Turkey Rare Breed (6, 8, and 12 year bourbon, 116 proof) or Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit (Single Barrel, at least 8 years old, 101 proof) for right at $55-60. Or many, many other bottles that don't have a horsy on the stopper...

I’ve enjoyed every New Riff offering I’ve tried, they are doing things right, if you ask me. I found this one on Seelbach’s. I am pretty sure it was a limited release and was sold out at the distillery earlier this year. Maybe some stores still have it around.

I’m actually partial to their Bottled in Bond stuff, mostly because the barrel proof gets too hot to drink on a regular basis, but 100 proof is perfect for me.

Adds smoke flavor to the drink, not that it needed it, but just experimenting.. It works best with mixed drinks like Manhattans, Rusty Nails and the like.. And there's different woods to pick from, think like smoking a meats!

Ah right, that’s a fantastic idea I think I’ll be investing in a ‘smoker’ and have a play around with different flavours! Brilliant, thank you

I walked into one of our small liquor stores to buy some whiskey, and at the register I just threw out a “hey, got any Jack Daniels 10 year in back?” And they did! Really happy about this one, been waiting a while to get it.
