Poker Players?

I have been playing about ten years… probably a couple times a month. I really enjoy it. We are talking a couple hundred dollar nights, nothing extravagant, but strangely enough, I find it exhilarating and relaxing at the same time. My best night ever, I won maybe $1,000. But trust me, I lose WAY more often then I win Does anyone else play regularly? Know how to win? TELL ME!!!!

Why’d you have to go and awaken my inner gambling nut lol

I use to play once a month or so. Sounds like same as you. 200 buy in cash games at the local casino mostly. I set a hard 2 buy ins max rule and generally go for entertainment only. If I lose so be it. I’m there for fun not to make a living. Sadly havent played since my son was born 2.5 years ago for better or worse.

I play with a group regular group of guys ...... usually once a month! It's more of a let's catch up and bitch and moan get together it seems!?!?

Getting a more difficult to get together since the guys have alienated half the wives already being too noisy and rambunctiou!! Just down to two fellas and my place to host!!

Good thing my wife is a good sport and actually enjoy the guys being over to play!

My learning towards gambling is, well hard to hear for some. It’s thievery as the loser reluctantly hands over his money with nothing in return and does nothing good for humanity…..Says the Rabbi….

Besides I have this little twitch in my left eye, each time I get a good hand….?

You could actually have more poker cred with a nice black eye patch anyways.

Just thinking out loud here.

Yes, I play quite often

Be patient, wait, don’t rush/push, stay focus, hit when you have best calculated chances
Don’t bluff without knowing/reading first the player(s)
It’s boring but gives you the highest winning rate :)

Don’t drink when playing:)))

Good luck

I have weekly game with a group of about 11 regulars (about 7-8 usually show up at any one time). We play very small stakes ($2 ante and max. $2 bet). Over the course of a year I probably break even. We've been doing this for over 40 years.

I'm bored so I'll relate this story.

When I was working in LA in the 80s I did some photography work for Franciscan Communications which was tied into the Catholic Church and we made movies and wrote books for a Catholic School type audience.

I was sent to photograph a mothers- against- nuclear- energy/bombs rally in the desert outside Vegas at a nuclear test site. Martin Sheen was gonna be there to be arrested.

Anyways they asked if I'd take a guy with me who was around my age and a Franciscan Brother who was about to be ''admitted" into the priesthood. This is like a road trip movie.

So we drove to Vegas and stayed at one of the casino hotels which he picked out. I didn't care. He was a cool guy and when we got to the room he handed me $1000 and asked me to hold it for him. He said he may need it later. I said sure and didn't understand but.....

So next morning we went out and photographed Martin Sheen and about 100 people get arrested for half and hour and then let go, and we drove back to Vegas.

So that night he says he's going downstairs and can he have $500 of his money. I gave it to him and he said, no matter what don't give him the rest if he comes and asks for it.

Around midnight he wakes me up and wants the rest of the money, and I said you told me not to give it to you. But I relent and give it to him and I went back to sleep.

Next morning he's up and and I get up, and he said thanks, and that he won $9000 playing poker and offered to give me half and I said no. It wasn't mine to have.

So he offered to pay for 3 more nights in Vegas and we'd see a bunch of shows.

So we did and had a blast for a few days, and then drove back to LA and I never saw him again. I asked someone a few months later and they said yeah he was a priest now.

Ya just never know.

I'm thinking it wasn't his first rodeo.

My guess was he was a Catholic guy with a gambling addiction and wasn't happy with the way his life was going and that's why he joined the priesthood.

Vegas was his last hurrah.

Or maybe not.

I played in a home game for almost 25 years. One guy died, a few moved away and it fell apart. I really miss it, it was great entertainment. It was an $80 buy in, on a good night could win $200 - $300 or lose just as much on a bad night. We never tracked it, but I would be surprised if at the end of any given year anyone was up or down more than $500.

I used to go to Commerce Casino once in a while, but didn't really enjoy it, too many people there trying to make a living at it, even at the $1-$2 tables.

Haven’t been able to play due to Casino closing due to covid. I have been watching the Triton poker 1 million Euro buy in, the biggest buy in in poker history. It’s quite entertaining. Spotted Rolex and PP at the table. Will post pictures later.

I had a hockey buddy in Santa Rosa who played online poker professionally.

Not sure on the legalities but I think it was banned or something and he moved to Panama, then somewhere else in Central America/ South America to play.

He'd turn up back in Santa Rosa every year or so for a couple of weeks and be gone again.

It's amazing how much money is put on a poker table by players who have never read a single poker book. If you are serious about winning, read as many poker books as you can. It will be completely eye opening and much better use of your time than asking for people on the Internet how to win at poker.

Studying is a must these days, specially if you want to be involved in tournament poker.

the game is always changing and you need to keep up with the game theory. Surely, anyone can have run good and take down even the most experienced poker player, but what separates the good players from the bad is that their play is sustainable and trends up and to the right.

Reading poker books is level one, find a good poker forum where you can ask questions and learn from others. Keep refining your game and you'll be beating on those that don't even try to improve.

In a past life, I played poker professionally for a good decade. Barely touch the cards these days as no legal poker in Ontario and home games are few and far between.

You can learn by watching videos from poker training sites. It should help you grasp the basic theory/logic needed to beat low stakes games pretty quickly.

runitonce.com was really popular a few years ago. not sure about the quality of their videos nowadays

I have been thinking about getting a local game going. use to play in high school and college on the regular.

I was thinking of a tournament style, with 8-9 players.

buy in maybe $50, winner takes pot minus $100 for second place.

any one have recommendations on gear, chips, etc.

what about actually setting up tournament with graduated blinds increases, to run for 3-4 Hours.

or chip counts to start?
