Sorry, I thought you were a seal...

This theory has been around for a long time, that Shark bites and attacks are generally that Sharks mistake surfers for a seal and after a bite will often realize their mistake and move on...

As I’m on my way out for a surf . . . thx blansky

I have heard that human/sharks tangles are mostly “exploratory” bites. Problem is, the damage can be so devastating and the time to get out of the water and get medical aid so long, you may not make it. Interesting that the juveniles’ vision is worse than adults and may account for some of these “mistaken identity” bites

Hey, …. When you’re done with your dip, give me a call. I’m around all day today!

(Enjoy “the water”, Jessie! Don’t look like a pinniped….)

Someone comments; "and still we swim"...........when you say,..."we".

So many reasons not to swim.
Plastic, raw sewage, crude oil deposits, Portuguese Men O' War, Sea Urchins underfoot, not to mention the big bitey creatures looking to take chunks outa my bum!

Tell me, ('Scouts Honour') that you didn't clench, when reading, that last part!

Just got out. Still checking my extremities and having some grub. Everything seems to be intact. I’ll ring you in a few!

The actual “dangers” the ocean present pale in comparison to driving your car to the supermarket. Wear your watches and dip in the ocean. It’s all gonna be fine.

I'm not surprised. If sharks really viewed people as a food source, they'd be picking us off ten every hour. What's more amazing to me is that people dress up to look like a shark's favorite food and then go swimming/surfing in areas where that favorite food lives, yet the sharks are rarely fooled.

Of course, when a mistake does happen, the results can be devastating.

Sharks may not like the taste of humans and prefer seals but if I was really hungry I might eat brussel sprouts

Well I for one love roasted brussel sprouts (with Parmesan and a touch of molasses) and I surf. So I guess I’m screwed. But seriously, there’s a wave off of the bottom of anacapa island that I hear is legendary but right in the white shark feeding zone. Our boat is almost ready and I think that will be a first stop for us. Hahhahahaha.

After Jaws came out there were people that were terrified to dangle their feet in the water in lakes, swimming pools and hot tubs.

So true. The land shark might just be a lot more dangerous than a water shark.

And a lot more crafty.

No mate, don't put words into my mouth. I'm suggesting that if any animal were hungry enough then it would, perhaps, eat something that wasn't its first preference.

No way man. It’s their turf. I’m only visiting. I don’t see the world that way at all, quite the contrary.

Good article, thanks Blansky.
Here is some recent drone footage from San Diego of juvenile great whites cruising the lineup completely uninterested.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qg_YhqOC6U

Apparently the locals are very aware of their presence and say they don't bother anyone.
Beautiful creatures, but that's a lot of trust and/or luck IMO.
I've been surfing for nearly 40 years and dont think I would knowingly paddle out into that line up. Yikes.

I remember when Peter Benchley wrote Jaws and saw it made into a hit movie and the immediate destruction of sharks worldwide, that he immensely regretted that he ever wrote it.

That being said, danging your feet in the ocean seems much like going out and investigating that noise in the shed, and engaging the guy in the hockey mask.
