OP, there’s already been about a zillion threads about the brightly colored OP’s since their release. In a nutshell, Rolex hit a home run. They are attracting new folks to the brand as well as appealing to their longtime customer base. I had to pass on a Coral Red 41 a couple of months ago but will add one later this year.
As long as dealer demand is high (which it currently is) the aftermarket prices will stay high also. As to when supply meets demand my crystal ball is too cloudy to make a good prediction at this time.

They’re really cheap (at MSRP) and any cheap Rolex is now considered a future classic.

Rolex are starting a new trend, definitely I don't see the current situation as a 'fad'. The price point (provided that it the new OP could be obtained at MSRP) and the bright and fun colours are targeting the younger and non traditional Rolex purchaser demographic. Rolex managed to revive the OP line by bringing the vintage inspired (Stella dials) into the modern OP line, giving then distinctive and yet modern and fresh look while preserving the robust build and the typical Rolex DNA. The new OPs are fantastic and are the real stars of the 2020 release. Nobody expected that and in few years when some colours will be discontinued and new introduced the hype will be even fueled further.

I am lucky to own the green OP4 and if I have the opportunity I will get the Turquoise, the Yellow and Red in a heartbeat! The dark green appears traditional and versatile and the rest are just fire.

Btw, love the double batton markers, I feel they make the watch sportier.

thanks for pointing it out. It is the 36mm plus 41mm that have the double baton markers. Previous 39mm was still single baton.

I get it....some of the colors aren’t for everybody. But for me the “regular” blue / silver / black aren’t as interesting in this lineup. Like to have something different in the collection. Think Rolex was spot on with this release.

Speaking from personal experience with unusually colored dials (even unusual within the red, green, brown, and blues spectrums, etc.), I'd love the OP Tiffany Blue but probably tire of it quickly. That's just me. I hope the folks getting the Tiffany or yellow or coral or green love them for many years to come! They look pretty cool in photos. Silver, while definitely understated, is the keeper to my eyes.

I think the OP bright colored dials is a breath of fresh air for people wanting something different from the usual traditional dials of the sub, gmt, Daytona & DJ. Time will tell if it’s a legit demand or just a fad.

How is not buying a watch you're almost never going to wear a silly idea? And following your logic, just because I spent more money on other watches I actually wear and enjoy, I should be ok buying one I wouldn't wear much ?

Dude, I was only giving my honest opinion on how I felt about the OP. To me it was so underwhelming I didn't even feel like spending 6k on one. The only thing that redeems it a little bit is the funky yellow colour on a summer day. But that would have been hardly enough for me, thus not worth it. I'd almost never wear it, is my point. We don't have to love the same watches, do we ? .

Agree, it’s a fad. Don’t get me wrong, they’re nice watches and a good value at MSRP. But, it’s just an entry level Rolex. Why would I wear that over a super durable/capable SD43 or dressy DJ?

As Peter (PADI) mentioned, they never really caught on. Only made popular resurgence due to limited number produced and for certain markets which makes it appealing to collectors. As time goes by and more OPs are made, the demand will have been met.

saw a couple of articles on this. here is one. Apparently DD with these dials did not sell well and there were even rumors excess dials were destroyed accounting for the rarity of these watches today. Look to other TRFers to see if they know more.

For me the people calling it a fad and as a poor alternative to a sub, Batman, etc are missing the point. If I had only one watch to buy I’d get the traditional sub every time. No question.

But for people who have several watches already, I guarantee 90% won’t have something remotely similar to a bright pastel OP and it slots in easily and cheaply into the collection - and for younger people who’ve never had a watch at all but who now want one, well clearly Rolex hit it out the park there.

For this reason I think prices will stay high, maybe they’ll settle 2k lower than here but certainly will remain above retail.

So far, what I can discern from the comments in this thread is that this line is to appeal to an less-served demographics who hopefully will grow to love the high-end timepieces and graduate eventually to the other more expensive models (and brands)as their wealth accumulates. It made sense that Rolex introduced these colors in their most basic line - OP (not in daydate, DJ). However how will Rolex maintain and grow the enthusiasm to this line if supply is limited to access the target demo and if grey market prices (2xMSRP) are in the same stratosphere as some other lines.

Since I posted this, the prices on the “lively” colors has only gone up (even the OP31). We were in several Bucherer (largest Rolex dealer in the country) stores last July and the OP36 has a multi year waiting list. Finally got the OP34 blue for my wife’s bday and they are within 1k of retail price in the gray market.
