why the cyclops?

A cyclops is a functional thing - not a glimmer issue. This debate reflects the new norm; Rolex has become wrist candy for some instead of just a robust tool telling the time - and the date.

Having said that, a cyclops need AR - because without it, it is kinda useless in a room with many light sources as the reflections kill the view into the date wheel. Oh, the irony that the AR is not there on vintage and neo-vintage watches.

Cyclop was the reason I went for 16600 instead. The old SD was the only Rolex with date without a cyclop. Had the perception that cyclop magnification is for older folks with presbyopia

I am one of those guys who actually use the watch for time and date. So, having a date that I can see without stressing my eyes is always welcomed. For me, cyclops has some utility and my eyes appreciate it.

My omega watches (another brand I love) have tiny date window and useless for any practical purposes.

My first Rolex was a 1978 Submariner date. I loved the thick crystal and the cyclops over the date. I could never have another one without the date and cyclops!

Yep, agree. Before I knew ANYTHING about Rolex I knew about that "bubble thingy" over the date. Now that 9 have eclipsed 50 y/o I appreciate it more than ever.

To many, having a Rolex without the cyclops is giving up a major source of brand identification. They may not say it but the cyclops gave the masses a easy way to tell it was a Rolex from 10 feet away. I find it incredibly helpful and a very simplistic solution to reading the date. I do like the cyclops better on the inside like Panerai does it because the face is so much cleaner.

Senior Designer: "No, no, we will stick a big magnifying glass on the crystal and call it the cyclops - much better - done!
