There is a massive shortage right now. Before the new releases there were quite a few around, now any that do appear are almost double the list price,! Prices literally went up about £2k overnight after the recent launch.

Great piece. Agree w others here. Only a hefty offer price would get me to sell it off.

Well, if one has a 39mm and wants the 36mm instead, now would not be the time to sell. They would wait until the 36mm are available, see one in person to make sure it isn’t too small, THEN sell their 39mm. Grey market price and availability may reflect that if it is a trend.

This is actually the first and only Rolex I've ever purchased at an AD. Picked it up during my transit at LHR. Got it for my wife, probably never going to sell it. Saw one at the AD window middle of last year, not the most popular Rolex sports model. Now everybody wants it once being discontinued.

I checked WF on the morning of the launch of the new 36mm Explorer (hence discontinuation of the 39mm) and they had 4 x 214270's available ranging in price from circa £6.8k - £7.3k.

Next time I checked (and it could have been 24 - 48 hours max) all the 214270's were gone.

Only had the 36mm's for sale.

It's either individual's jumped on the four straight away, one person hoovered up all four or WF have pulled them off sale to sit on and see where the hype (if any) takes the price over the coming weeks/months??

I bought my Mk2 out of the case at my AD, I think in 2016 when it first came out. Paid in cash, even got them to eat the taxes. Those were the good old days. It has become perhaps my favorite watch. It's a keeper. I wonder if I need to up my insurance??? lol

In what sense is the MK1 a collectible? It was around longer then the MK2. If anything the MK2 is the more collectible by virtue of the shorter production run. The shorter hands may make it somewhat collectible, but it’s been around longer then the MK2

Typical? What evidence is there that grey market dealers hold back stock to drive up prices? Are they all colluding?

I have to say it is the perfect watch, classic, sporty but dressy too, and comfortable! I got mine recently and am so glad- I can’t understand why they downsized it (I do want to see the 36mm in person and potentially add the two tone as a fun piece, but not to replace the 39).

This isn't a court of law...the watch market is all speculative these days anyway, no one has to provide evidence of anything one way or the other.

No, not a court of law but when one makes assertions like that, you should have examples to support your position. It’s only been a week since the Explorer has been discontinued, it takes time for these transactions to close, get the watches in to the hands of the resellers and then ready for sale. Besides, the Explorer wasn’t all that big a seller until maybe 2018.

I’d bet the grey market is turning over as many sports watches as the AD’s, plenty of TRF members are using them, no one has suggested the resellers are holding back stock to inflate prices.

Again, it's speculating....they make assertions, you make assertions. No one has to prove anything. Welcome to the internet. Where everything and nothing is true all at the same time. Asking someone to prove their point when you can't prove your own is a bit two sided IMO though.

I'm not selling. It'll probably rise dramatically and then come back down in a year, I'm not paying attention. This watch isn't going anywhere.

I had a 214270 (twice), and I would not let it go again if I knew I couldn't get it back. I predict a 41mm version will come eventually, but in case it never does, hang on to your 39's!

If I could only keep one watch for the rest of my life, it would be my 214270. I owned the MKI back in 2012 and then re-purchased a MKII about two weeks before the announcement that it was discontinued. I feel very fortunate to have one and will hold onto this one for life!

It said that every man has a price, and I’m sure that’s true of me too. However it would sure take a lot for me to get rid of my favorite Rolex!

(Although I must say my new blue 0P 41 is giving it a run for the money)

Ever since the new 36mm Explorer came out, I have looked at a lot of photos/videos of both 39mm mk1 and mk2. To be honest, mk2 has the true ordinary Explorer look with 369 lumed dial and sportier for sure. However, I have started to appreciate the weirdness of my mk1 even more now. 14270/114270/214270 mk2/124270 are more or less the same dial under the same family, while 1016/214270mk1 are the only two models that look far apart from the ordinary design of Rolex Explorer. In the long run, people would realize that mk1 is a true collectible piece. Last but not least, you can always take the mk1 back to Rolex and have them replace the hands and dials with mk2's, so it's a plus.
