Rolex's Yellow Color- too bright?

I currently have a silver Datejust and have been contemplating switching it to a two toned version. However, after trying them on, I felt that the yellow tone is very flashy. Does this tone down after wear? It looks great in photos, but in person, I just feel like it's a bit too in your face/busy. Thoughts?

18K gold does patina a little if it's stored and unworn but that takes years/decades.

As it's solid 18K regular wear keeps away any patina and just reveals fresh shiny 18K gold :)

If it doesn't grab you, consider "Everose"...I'd never considered that option, until I visited a shop earlier this year and stumbled across a 36mm Datejust, white dial, baton indices, jubilee bracelet, stainless steel and rose gold, or, as Rolex calls it, Everose. I bought that Datejust and its become a favorite.

Everose has a lovely hue and warmth and you just might like it.

I love Rolex YG. I don't care much for Rolex RG though. I like the brightness of Rolex YG and not so much the dullness of their RG.

I have a two tone Daytona 116503 (black dial) and I was concerned about the gold being a bit flashy as I'm a pretty conservative guy. I've only had it for a week but I'm really enjoying it. I actually find the yellow gold to be pretty subtle, especially in bright light.

Thankfully, two tone pieces are fairly plentiful so you should be able to track one down in an AD. Be sure to check it out in different light as its look does change fairly drastically.

I agree with this. The other brands seem to do rose gold a lot better - but nothing compares to Rolexes yellow gold.

Yep, exactly my sentiments. AP/PP RG is > Rolex RG, but Rolex YG is King.

Rolex YG is the BEST out of them all. The color is miles better than AP/Patek YG.

Rolex RG is what needs to improve imho.

If you wouldn't feel comfortable wearing it, then it's not for you.

For me it's not so much the gold itself as the blend of proportions, colours and textures. Some work for me, some don't. Eye of the beholder and all that.

I find that the typical lighting setups in AD’s is never the best for seeing the gold at it’s best. It can look too blingy and flashy. Out in more natural light the YG really shows its best character, it looks quite different in a range of lighting conditions. It sure has a warmth to it, that I don’t think SS (only) has...

I don’t like gold watches in general, but I like YG better than RG, and if I ever were to get a gold watch, it would be a YG Rolex DayDate.

Also, I’m pretty sure I’d probably prefer your silver DJ over any TT DJ.

I think TT is more flashy that full-YG. It has do to with different materials creating a more intense contrast (like the PCLs in modern steel bracelets). Rolex YG takes a rich warm color over time.

My TT DJ can be garishly bright in some light, and glowingly mellow in other light. When it glows and the diamonds catch the light just so, telling time is a real treat.

Yes, the yellow gold definitely tends to be bright. The Everrose gold is more subtle. However, the yellow gold does tend to warm up a little over the years and become less flashy.

Yellow gold is not for everyone, two tone or solid. If not comfortable then RG or WG would be my suggestion.

RG has a very copper like feel, which makes it non obvious gold is at play there. A great flashy yet subdued proposition IMO.

RG vs YG. For Rolex I much much prefer YG. For AP or Patek their RG is nicer but its closer to Rolex YG.

The RG of Rolex is too copperish imho. It should be a lighter shade and more towards the YG tone.

the tt Datejust 41 has a beautiful combination of YG and steel. this sets it apart from the ss models but its definitely more flashy then the ss. I like the flashiness of it so no worries for me but I get your concern...

I used to like two-tone and gold on magazines and other people's wrists but I would only wear steel. Two years ago I started to be interested in bimetal watches. To me they bring a bit of refinement to the table. I like the TT DJ and the TT Sub. Last year I took the jump and got my first Rolesor, a Sub Bluesy. It's my favourite piece. There's a time for understated and a time for a bit of colour. I'd totally rock a TT DJ. Age probably played a role in my change of taste. Now I'm looking for my first full gold dress piece.

I agree. Rolex RG looks like copper to me. It needs more gold for my liking.
