Explorer 2 216570 Caliber 3187 - Used only in this watch and no more in production...

For Rolex collectors we know Rolex uses/re-uses same calibers in the range of watches they produce i.e. 3135, 3130, 3186, 3185, etc.

The only exception is this caliber 3187 - used only particularly in this model Explorer 2

Can't understand why they make this kind of decision - all R&D costs cannot be recouped for this caliber from a business point of view...

Any take on this ?

I don't follow Rolex movement numbers but it is my understanding that the Explorer II movement shares 80-90% of its parts with the GMT II. The movement is assembled on top of a bigger base plate to fit in the 42mm case.

I’m sure that movement had a lot in common with the GMT and was in production for ten years .

I don’t know all the details but as far as I’m aware it’s just a GMT movement with their shock absorbers in it (aka wiggly bits of metal). So essentially completely the same and nothing overly unique from the GMT.

More details on this 3187 from the Internet....

"Like Cal. 3186, Cal. 3187 used an anti-magnetic Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers rather than the Nivarox spring found in Cal. 3185. But Cal. 3187 was larger, measuring 30.97 mm in diameter, to move the date window outward in the 42 mm case of the Explorer II."

On the technical side,on the so called new Explorer 11 the movement does have a new name the Caliber 3187. But IMHO no way is it a completely new movement. However it does differ very slightly from the former caliber 3185 that was introduced first in 1988/9.Its now slightly thicker and slightly larger top/bottom plates but apart from the blue Parachrome hairspring different indent gear on the cal 3186 and now on the cal 3187 the added in-house Paraflex shock absorbers thats about it deep down its mostly 3185/86 based.

Used only in 216570.
It is a variant of 3186 with the addition of the Paraflex system

Not the only exception, the 3136 was only ever used in the Datejust 2 series. Basically a 3135 with added Parachrom shock absorbers. A really tough movement and incredibly accurate as well.
