Some states have zero sales tax. Other states set a sales tax for the entire state. And some others allow local jurisdictions within the state to add a sales tax onto the state sales tax. A few states even exceed 9% now when state and local are combined.

Since most people buy in the state in which they reside it's fairly easy to follow.

The high price of a Rolex is driven by the perceived status and quality. But, really, a Rolex is arguably better quality than an Omega, but not that much better.
