DD 40 - WG Olive vs Platinum blue motif
Hi,
I have a small collection curated over the last 4 years. I have traded out the following: JC Deepsea - Loved it, size was fine but the ring lock writing got to me 5513 - Sacrilege I know but I prefer the more substantial feel of modern Rolex 16600 x 2 - upgraded (arguably) to SD43 Daytona - Non ceramic - felt it wore a bit small YM 16622 - Didn't gel with it. Prices now shot up. Tut Pepsi - pre-ceramic - Didn't gel with it - another that shot up :) Bluesy pre-ceramic - Upgraded to 41mm Wimbledon DJ - Felt a bit monochromatic Current collection: Rootbeer - TT - Love the subtlety of RG and the bezel Bluesy 41 - Jury's out on this as still feels a bit flashy SD43 - Fantastic and versatile I would like to add a PM piece and feel it's time for a day date. I fell in love with the platinum blue diagonal motif a few years ago but not sure I could justify the cost. The white gold olive dial is it's main competition. I do appreciate DD should be YG but it's a little too flashy for my taste and not a fan of RG except in the Rootbeer where aesthetically it comes together. Any pics / comments appreciated and also if anyone can speak to the versatility i.e could a DD be a daily? I would probably consolidate the Bluesy 41 in to the DD. I would also be open to other suggestions. Thanks all. Madison |

There is no comparison. If your not going YG, Get the platinum.

I haven't had the chance to experience the DD in gold, but I was fortunate enough to try on the platinum with diagonal motif a couple years back at my AD. It's an absolutely stunning watch - I've never fallen in love with something so quickly. If you can afford it, I think it's well worth it. That being said, I can't tell how much you like the olive vs. the blue.
I do think the DD is perfectly fine as a daily though.

I would suggest trying both mate, yes big price difference but what some don’t appreciate is that side by side white gold (from Rolex at least but also more generally) is much darker than platinum. It’s more like grey gold where as platinum is much closer to white colour.

If budget is good either way, the platinum is really nice.

For Day-Date, I think RG Olive dial (picture above by Gravity) is the most gorgeous timepiece. I don't think Day-Date have to be YG.

Have one of the watches you mentioned already but in RG and I think it can be daily worn non issue depending on lifestyle. With that being said no one is going to look twice if you’re in a WG color scheme. The only people that’s going to notice are dudes that are also into watches.
The DD is probably my favorite watch if that helps any. I prefer the DD over my sub and Pepsi. |

I’d probably trade both the Bluesy and the TT Rootbeer towards the Platinum DD. That and the SD43 make a fine pair.

Rolex seems to have discontinued the platinum “blue” motif .. and no more blue hands n blue deconstructed Roman numerals on Rolex website.

Thanks guys. I think I am leaning toward platinum. Sorry for the confusion. When I mentioned motif dial I meant the criss cross pattern. Forgive me not knowing the name of it. I must admit the RG looks great in that configuration.

Dont make the same mistake as me. After ALL these years I truly still believe your first DD40 should be a YG piece. |

Your first does not have to be yg, that’s a slogan that lives on for some reason. I don’t subscribe. Platinum for the win.

Platinum DD will be very versatile and less flashy compared to YG DD. Go for it.

I have the DD40 wg/olive and absolutely love it. I don't really care that many feel your first DD needs to be yg; I wear what I like, which is white metals. That platinum is a stunner as well but very different price points. You can't go wrong!

I’ve been wearing Rolex for years .. all the hyped up models and I’ll be honest one of my favorites is my DD40 .. wow what an absolute beauty ... I know you said no YG for you, mine is YG/champagne/Romans.. to answer your question, if you can end up justifying cost of the platinum then I say that’s the one .. it’s an absolute grail of mine, sooo nice !
I really love the Arabic version lol — WAYY too hard to get and obscene pricing aftermarket in that particular one though |

DD 40 - WG Olive vs Platinum blue motif
Would def go for the YG. This watch is meant to be flashy, it deserves it. For me it would be either SS (in general offcourse) or if PM then YG or RG.

For me a Day Date must have a fluted bezel, so platinum is a no-go for me.
If you want white gold, give the slate dial a try. I tried one on at my AD not long ago and was shocked at how much I liked it. The blue roman is another sharp looking WG DD. I'm one of the few around here who does not dig the olive dial. The shade of green is just too subtle I think. |

WG DD40
The flat bezel on the Platinum kills it for me. I wish it were slightly rounded/domed like previous versions... |
