As an aside, for an example of the kind of nutters that play rugby, check out the biography of great All Black Buck Shelford - the bit about his scrotum

I'd rather have a trip to my AD to find available SS sports in the display case

Now if the World Cup can give us this entertainment all the time then that’ll be great.

Now that is a sport that must be admired. I can not imagine all to many rugby players flopping around with fake injuries.

Saw my EAGLES win in Minnesota with my pops. 12 rows from the Philly Special, well worth the money.

That's nothing! How many former NFL players end up with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE)? A LOT. When it comes to brain injury, the NFL dwarfs the competition. Many NFL players have been diagnosed with CTE despite the fact that diagnoses can only be made post-mortem, the real numbers may be absolutely staggering.

I wasn’t really comparing, I just wanted to post a funny GIF and Rugby Union is a great game, regardless of whether another game across the pond “boasts” a larger number of participants whose brains get tenderised

As it happens the evidence suggests the risk of significant injury per minute is similar in both football codes. The nature of the games - no padding and generally shorter sprints with players usually being chopped or pulled down, vs body armoured men charging head first at full speed towards each other, with or without the ball - means that Rugby and American Football injuries tend to differ in proportional composition.

I dare say that rugger players may be a fair bit more suspect to leg and lower body injuries, I do wonder whether concussions are common place in rugby. If American football players didn't wear helmets they would be dying from blunt force trauma on a weekly basis. I certainly wouldn't allow my children to play, the brain is far too important of an organ and even minor frontal lobe damage can have devastating effects.

There are a huge number of concussions in Rugby (I will use the term as shorthand for Union, sorry League fans). It would be an unusual match that didn’t have one and there are often several. Recognition of the dangers of concussion have increased massively in the last ten years, in large part due to what has been revealed in the NFL. Rugby was an amateur sport even at the highest level until about 20 years ago. Since professionalism, players have become bigger and more powerful - the forwards average about 250lb - and that has led to an increase in injuries in general and head injuries in particular. This in turn has led the governing body to tighten up the rules on legal tackling and challenges (especially tackles above the neck, effectively “clotheslines”) that might’ve gone unpunished 30 years ago will now get you a sin-bin or even sent off and banned.

I’m no expert on the American code, though I do enjoy watching when I can, but it strikes me that your game is heavily influenced by the armour. If football players didn’t wear helmets, they’d soon learn to alter how they initiate a collision or else they’d have a very short life expectancy, as you say. In short, without padding, NFL would be a little bit more like rugby, at least as far as contact goes. Part of the reason CTE is such a big deal over there is because the helmets allow players to repeatedly smash their heads week in, week out and still be able to continue. It’s the repeated nature of the injuries that’s so dangerous. In rugby several players have had to retire due to repeated concussions because the severity of the concussion when it happens sans helmet is not conducive to a long career.

There’s an aphorism that American Football has lots of padding but few rules about what you can do to people and Rugby has little padding but more rules about what you can do.

As a quick aside, even the girl’s game (I am a huge Soccer fan, probably the greatest sport in the world, but a lot of the players really are fannies) has generated controversy relating to head injuries. A great English player, Nobby Stiles, died a young man after being diagnosed with dementia. He was subsequently found to have suffered CTE due to heading a big, heavy (as it was in those days) leather ball tens of thousands of times during his life.

My apologies to the OP for side-tracking the thread. I have a strong interest in medicine and sport so this stuff is engaging to me.

Depending on the teams.......
Super Bowl would be my First Choice.
For example, Last Super Bowl I would chose the World Cup 110%
Those would be my first two choices.

Neither. I would rather have the funds it cost to do this to go toward buying a watch. I prefer to watch from the comfort of my home.

I attended the 2012 NY Giants-NE Patriots Super Bowl. A great experience! I would attend the Super Bowl if the Giants are in it, otherwise Switzerland.

Man, are you kidding? The WC is the world's most relevant sporting event by a margin of a few billion people. Give me that any day.
