I'm contemplating a pair of Rancourt Bartlett in Espresso Shell. Any words of wisdom?

I was lucky enough to buy them from a guy on SF. I had the opportunity to buy a pair of whiskey LWBs also, but passed. I regret it.

Sorry...A guy on "SF" ???

In my case, yes. The previous owner said that he had only worn them a few times and based on the condition, I believed him. I know it seems weird to buy used shoes, but when it comes to rare makeups, beggars can't be choosers. I bought them for a very reasonable price, too. Check SF and eBay for Ravello Aldens and you'll see many people asking $1000-$1500. Bastards!

When I think about it, buying a pair of shoes that had only been worn a few times isn't bad. That's practically new compared to the watches that I buy that have previously been worn for 40-50 years.

I bought my John Lobb Chapels from a gent that bought online, and they didn't fit. They were barely creased, and I saved hundreds of dollars.

It's a fairly common practice, I think. And no different in my mind than buying a pre owned watch.

Get them.

I don't have that particular shoe and it's one but a few colors of shell from them I don't own, but Rancourt does make some great shoes. In fact of all the shoes I own besides Edward Green & Gaziano & Girling I probably own more from Rancourt than any other shoemaker.

Check out this thread.

No worries - no judgement here. I understand that's normal for Alden's and other high end shoes. Folks buy a pair and they just don't fit. L...so they sell them.

I think used would be the only way to get Ravello or cigar shell Cordovan.

The NY store will put regular customers on a list ala the Ceramic Daytona... but the San Francisco shop wouldn't even offer...

Congrats.

When you try them on, walk on carpet and don't over flex them. That will keep them fresh if the don't fit and you need to return them.

You'll have to update us and tell us what you think when you get them. Unfortunately I've found unless I custom order loafers are not for me. I think that's pretty common for those with one foot a half size smaller than the other,

Got my shoes back from AE after about a month.

They seem to have done a good job. They definitely seem tighter, but hopefully will break in the same way they did before.

Before and after

Very nice. It looks like AE did a great job. The exposed nails on the heel pad is interesting. Never seen that before. The Dainite should last you a long time. You definitely won't burn through those as quickly as the leather soles.

My john Lobb boots just arrived, picture by skoaktiebolaget. Unfortunately the shoe laces snapped the first day of wearing them, I am using the supplied spares now but need to get better laces.

Beauties! Too bad they can't afford good laces for the price you pay!

Thank you! They are very comfortable. I got some spare laces from Skoaktiebolaget today to try out in them. I hope they will hold up better.

It is strange that some manufacturers seem to supply their shoes/boots with sub-par laces. My Gaziano&Girling boots also had crappy laces, they snapped within a couple of weeks, wearing them maybe every third day. The laces in my Carmina, Viberg, and Edward Green boots are still the original ones. My Carmina boots are over 5 years old and I had the heels replaced last year. I walk up to 2000km per year so I need proper shoes that can be repaired.

I really like the look of these Westons:

How is JM Weston in terms of quality? Are they in the Alden/C&J range or a step above?
