What happens if you damage a Rolex while viewing it at store?

just curious if you scratch it or drop it etc while trying it on at the store, I wonder if it's happened to anyone and what happened as a result.

you break, you pay or i'd assume that would be the case. At the very least you would have to pay to repair it.

I'm sure they have insurance to cover it. That's been the running joke though recently, if they let you try on a Daytona that they can't sell you, just drop it and then maybe they'll force you to buy it.

How do I do that for a SS Daytona?

If it is a hot model, they probably rejoice as they now can sell it as used.

Nothing happens. These watches are for display and therefore are prone to scratches and a possible damage. everything is insured.

I am sure once this occurs, the AD will make up some new "Rolex Policy" on the fly to cover it.

Same as if you damage a car on a test drive. You’re paying for it

That is impossible with no watches at the displays.

They're talking about imaginary damage.

Absent the AD letting me resize the watch to try it on, how could I damage it? I'll likely slip the watch on while hovering over the empty case, so it can't fall far.

Nothing, I saw a salesperson drop a Rolex face down on tile while he was sitting down. He rubbed it with a cloth and put it back in the case!

Generally at my local AD they sit you down to try things on at a desk, so damaging anything wouldn't be easy. I'm sure they're covered but best to keep some money with you just in case.

If you go in a store pick up some item on your own, getting no permission to do so you pay. Now when a sales persons hands you and item like a watch and you accidentally damage it. It's on them. they let you handle the item all liability is on the store.

Funny you mention that, but I recently visited a few ADs on a trip I took and was a bit gob smacked by how they handled the watches

they do have display only models, at least thats all they had in the airports I passed by lately. I suppose these are akin to the shells they have at baselworld for the photo shoots.

How do you think the term “case rash” came about? It’s appalling how some handle these...

I went in looking for the least expensive datejust I could get my hands on and with no intention of buying anything else, tried on a YG Rainbow Daytona. As I was slipping it off my wrist to hand back to the SA it came crashing down on to the glass top of the display case, four gemstones popped out and tumbled to the floor. The look on the SA’s face was one of horror...I handed the ruins back to him and booked it. Still waiting for them to call me about a black SubC, have been waiting years now. I am sure the call will be coming any day. Also they stopped sending me a Christmas card each year since the incident

Exactly.

When I was in high school, I had a friend bet me the price of a 40oz beer that he would get the store clerk to sell it to us (no fake id). I took the bet, he walked up to the fridge, grabbed the beer, opened it and slammed a third of it. The clerk ran over and was like you have to pay for that!! my friend looked at me and said, pay the man.

Ah, I’ve got experience with this at the AD at Kaanapali in Maui a few years back...

Dropped a used Cellini while taking it off...

Came in a made it clear I wasn’t ready to purchase anything, but was gearing up for a purchase after I hit a goal with my company. (Tried on the WG Pepsi... drool)

As I was leaving, a different SA approached and insisted I try on a used Cellini... he was pressuring me to buy something. I thought what the heck, I’ll make the guy happy and head on my way... then I dropped it while taking it off

Miraculously there was no damage... externally anyway.

After it dropped he said “you know I can make you buy this now, right?” And proceeded to call me arrogant, and too “comfortable around watches”. I apologized, but reminded him I didn’t want to try it on in the first place...I told him I wasn’t going to buy it and he asked me to leave.

I’ve never been made to feel like this guy did before or since at an AD. It’s the one and only time I’ve experienced high pressure sales tactics at a Rolex AD.
