DD40 vs FP Journe Chronomètre Souverain

I'm thinking about either a DD40 (yellow or rose gold) or a FP Journe Chronomètre Souverain for my next piece. Realizing these watches are very different, has anyone cross shopped these before? If you had asked me a month ago I would have sworn up and down that I was going to get the Journe but for whatever reason the DD40 is really speaking to me these days.

I'm a suit and tie guy at the office and the Journe seems like it makes more sense for wearing once or twice a week but interested to hear any thoughts you have on this. My other dress watches are a DJ41 and a Vacheron. TBH I'm not sure I can pull off a solid gold watch.

Cheers

DD40. The solid gold bracelet and simpler and classic dial design make the deal for me.

I'd vote FPJ.

What color dial?

Well you have a Rolex DJ so for variety you could go Journe. It will be higher maintenance and more prone to issues than a Rolex but that is a feature of high horology. Gotta pay to play.

Get a used FPJ and used DD 36 and you can have two for the price of one!

Based on your other watches, I would go with the FPJ.

But I happen to like quirky watches and it’s definitely not for everyone.

DD40 vs FP Journe Chronomètre Souverain

F.P. Journe-haute horlogerie from an independent. You’ll not look at Rolex the same again.

Tough. The Journe is so nice but that DD just siren songs you in. Mine didn’t last long but I have zero regrets about checking that box.

Close one, I would say DD because its versatile. If you said WG than DD hands down as I prefer WG.

DD because I would rarely wear the FPJ. Great watch, neat, novel, finishing etc, but it would get no wrist time from somebody like me that rarely wears a dress watch.

What watch will you look forward to putting on in the morning and regret taking off at night? What watch will you wear so often that your other watches will be jealous? That’s the watch for you.

Very different styles imho. The D40 works for more outfits and is highly durable, whereas the FPJ is far and away a better hand-crafted timepiece for (generally) more formal wear.

Good question as exactly the CS and DD40 are the only two references I´ve been interested in for quite a few years now.

I didn´t pull the trigger for either. I think the DD40 is the better watch for daily wear.

Im biased as I wear a CB but I'd go for the Journe anyday especially if you're buying second hand. The CS in platinum or gold can be had for under 25K EUR.

This for me. I understand why FP receives the recognition (and it's well-deserved), but for that day-to-day happiness of strapping the watch on, I just don't get that feeling in an FP when compared to a DD40.

Sounds like the Journe suits your needs better, I would aim for the Plat if you can, otherwise the RG.

I think for a suit and tie type guy, the DD40 would be perfect.

Lots of interesting responses. My office is a fairly conservative environment which is probably what is pushing me most towards the Journe. Well that and the gorgeous movement;) I'm going to own a YGDD one of these days though...

Journe. Hands down.

The only watch I've picked up and concluded "this is basically perfect". There are so many small things that make you realize its a watch for watch enthusiasts.

From the crown indentations to help winding, the lack of gaps, all the way through to the solid gold movement, it's just an amazing and functional watch in a way completely different from Rolex.

White metal DD40 would be very versatile. Not as flashy as RG/YG. I wear my DD40 with everything including shorts/T-shirt during the summer.

The FPJ is a definitely better finished and a haute brand. It will work well in a work environment but I still prefer the DD40.

I think they're very different watches, and I think your post sums it up. I almost view the DD40 as a t-shirt and out-of-office watch, while the FPJ is a strictly-speaking for all the office/formal occasions type of watch. The DD40 is arguably the more "well rounded" candidate, while the FPJ has a daintiness about it that makes it feel more art than bulletproof.

Seems like you know what you want, whether it's now or down the road. Why not pick up the DD and just continue to wear the DJ / Vacheron to work?

I promise you won't have regrets wearing the DD40 on the weekends, or even on Fridays to work
