Patek's 5726A-001 vs Rolex's 116519LN

Patek's 5726A-001 vs Rolex's 116519LN

I was recently able to get my two grail watches. They are both fantastic. Wearing them is such a loving experience.

I would love to get the community's thoughts on them!

Lol, I think the communities silence is a clear indication that we you have struck gold! Man those are both gorgeous, truly. Same AD?

Great pair! I really like the 5726 with black dial! Wish it is still available with SS bracelet. Congratulations!

Both watches are from highly respected brands and offer different features and styles. The Patek Philippe 5726A-001 is a more complicated watch with an annual calendar and moon phase display, while the Rolex 116519LN is a chronograph with a sportier look.

That looks like the original Patek strap that came with the 5726A?

IIRC, the original Patek strap for the 5726 does not have the white stitch. It's either all black alligator or the synthetic grey. Alternative straps for the Nautilus are very limited, so was wondering.

Both look amazing. The Daytona for daily playing and work. The 5726 for serious outings.

Incorrect.

The OEM alligator that comes with the watch is black with a grey stitch.

That's right. The Patek comes with two straps: a matte black alligator with the white stitching and a black composite. The thing I actually don't like about this watch is that changing straps is not easy. It requires a visit to an AD. The strap is attached through minuscule screws that are fixed with some kind of anti-vibration glue, which apparently requires applying heat prior to unscrewing.

Interesting, so the AD goes through that process with the heating to change the strap?? I love this 5726 precisely because it’s on a strap. Would you have preferred the blue dial 5726 on bracelet, or was this your first choice?
Did you get both of these pieces from an AD?
Congratulations on both these awesome grails.

5726A-001 was my first choice. I intend to use it as a daily wear, and the fear of scratching the bracelet against metal laptops would be annoying. Having said that, the blue dial is gorgeous. It is also more unattainable I think, for a first-time Patek purchase. These were obtained from two different ADs.

Yes. So it limits being able to change the strap to Patek's ADs. I also know at least one well-known Patek AD that was not able to change the strap on the spot because they didn't have a technician or the materials/equipment to do it.

For me, the Patek is the way to go.

Excellent choice, have them both and luckily in my part of the world can wear it everyday. The 519LN still is my favorite after 4 yrs of owning it. Still gets the most wrist time for me.

Well done, you have my dream set!!!

I currently have the PP which is still my favorite watch (Sub and speedy are the others in the collection).
I’m still waiting on the Daytona, which I found stunning in the flesh.

Curious on your thoughts since you already have both.

I would compare them in the following dimensions:
  • Functionality: Patek wins here. First and foremost, because the time is significantly more legible. With the Rolex, it is sometimes very difficult to tell the time when the lighting is not good. The Patek, on the other hand, is legible at all times. I also find the annual calendar complication and the 24hr time indicator more useful than the chrono complication of the Rolex, which I rarely use. The moonphase is irrelevant to me, though. In terms of water resistance, it is more than I need for both watches.
  • Material: Rolex wins here. The Rolex is white gold, whereas the Patek is steel. White gold scratches more easily. The Rolex clasp is a scratch magnet, and the body of the watch also scratches easily. So Patek would win here, if it weren't because I really like the added weight of the white gold. Also, the ceramic bezel helps protect the Rolex. I fear that scratches in the Patek bezel may become very annoying over time.
  • Movement: Patek wins. Its movement is a work of beauty. The Rolex does not have a crystal caseback so its movement cannot be appropriated. Also, the Patek movement feels more "alive". Because its rotor employs unidirectional winding with ceramic ball bearings, you can hear and feel it, reminding you that it is a mechanical watch.
  • Aesthetics: Tie. I like the dial of the Patek more, with its moonphase indicator, 24hr indicator, etc. But I find the ceramic bezel of the Rolex more beautiful than the Patek's, in steel.
  • Finishing: Patek wins. It is next level. Rolex feels more industrial.
  • Straps: Tie. Oysterflex vs alligator. Both are superb.

So technically based on the above the Patek would win, but in reality it is difficult to choose one over the other. They are "perfect" in different ways.

Congratulations! Both are beautiful watches. Do you happen to know how heavy the 5726A is in grams?

No, I haven't weighted it. In case it is useful, I can say it is lighter than Rolex steel sports models on oyster bracelets, which makes sense given the use of strap instead of bracelet.
