Nice to see the 1908. I wonder how it stacks up to a Lange Saxonia Thin. I suspect I’d still take the Lange. But the 1908 looks great.

Just see no reason to buy this when you can get a 5119 for 15K used. Also, not sure why they put a Breguet style hand on the hour but not minute hand. However, I do really like what Rolex did with the clasp on this. Perhaps they could expand that offering to other models...

It looks like a nice watch.
I quite like it more than the Cellini No Rose gold though |

I love it. Exactly what was needed in the Rolex line up.

Looks good. If/when they offer in RG, I think I'd give it a serious look.

Meh, doesn't look like a dress watch. More like a dressy classic looking watch for people who don't like formal dress watches, I guess. The lettering above the subdial is wrong. The numerals are so-so. Hour hand is peculiar. Pass.

I really like the 1908. Would love to have one. Something different from Rolex and nicely executed.

And this is why I think that the 1908 is the most consequential release from Rolex this year. It says something about where they are going as a company and a brand. I don't expect them to give up tool watches at all, but their brand cachet is so high, and the amount the can charge for their watches is so high right now, that they really might be able to challenge Patek in some fashion.
I also think this one is an absolute stunner. If only I did dress watches. |

Previous Cellini goes for $13K as a data point.

I haven't stopped thinking about this watch since the unveil a few days ago. I'm going to have to go and try one on and factor it into the collection sooner rather than later I think.

1908 also has an open case back
For this money (even less) you can get A Lange & Sohne. Something to keep in mind before jumping off the deep end on a Rolex dress watch. Assembled twice, hand finished movement, etc.

Definitely a move in the right direction. I like it, but I don't love it enough to drop 20k+ on it.

The release of this watch put me in a "crisis".
I'm patiently waiting a watch from my AD, but you know how we are... we are always "one step beyond", and so I was already deciding the details of my next-to-next watch (as a next to next was thinking a blue skyD). But the release of this watch messed up my plans. I really love it, and I don't know what to do. Some freewheeling comments: - not comparable to PP as a caliber. True. But definitely a big improvement from the 32XX. The latter are not nice to look at, but this new caliber is pleasant to see, and I'm happy the 1908 has a transparent caseback. - I know that Rolex does not produce haute horlogerie. But Rolex has its strengths in different sides: reliability and service after sales. For 10 years you do not have to think to your watch. difficult to find another brand reliable as rolex. (I think Lee raised this point, and I totally agree). So don't know what to do. few days ago, I had no uncertainties: blue SkyD, but now... I'm in crisis. The next to next would be my retirement watch, and 1908 fits more as retirement... So very undecided on my next to next. The more I look at this 1908, the more I like it (WG black dial). PS. anther bonus: Rolex WG is NOT rhodium plated. This is the way it will look forever. I remember few years ago (some decades...) Patek white gold watches were rhodium plated. Do anybody of you know if they still are? |

Why the love for this and not the Cellini?
It is largely a similar watch with some changes. I guess Cellini was introduced at a time of less hype and now any Rolex release is in high demand. Only reason I can think. Any other thoughts? |

I like it, a bit of Patek, Brequet even Chrono Swiss as Padi said 1940-50s Rolex as well, I just think the gold rotor is great but what lies underneath it looks like ETA-ish. I’d still buy one, one day.
