No, it's a thin font

service insert.

The correct MK I fat font has double the font thickness as that.

Hmmmm ... I don't think that's a kissing-4 insert. That looks like a thin-font insert. The kissing-4s are usually fat font, I think. Here's the insert on my 5512, which I believe might be a kissing-4. Maybe others can speak to this too.

I always amazed of the knowledge in this forum. The slightest details determine which mark they are and I have the slightest idea what mine is on the sub? All I know it that it's a fat font.

Thanks Nathan. What years were mark 1 and mark 2 made?

Thanks for the feedback all...I'm not so sure that this is a service insert. I think it came from a watch in the mid 70s. It definitely doesn't have print as thin as the service inserts...

How many different Marks are there out there and might anyone have a side by side photo of the variations?

It looks exactly like the service insert that was posted on here to me.

For the Kissing 4 the font should be "fat" and the 4 and 0 should pretty much be touching each other.

comparison of two different ..

series of service inserts : the one on the left has numbers with matt paint , the other has a more " glossy " paint ( as in the insert posted by 007sub ) ; fonts are the very same.

That one is a "long 5" insert

Here are the two I have; the first, very black one is the original fat-font insert which came on the 'RED' 1680 (I/70), and the faded one looks like the exact same font and period to me, and also originally came from a 1680.

I think the inserts are all over the place. While I am guilty of using the "MK" designation more than I should there seems to be occasionally variants popping up from time to time that would need to insert the decimal system to fit in the existing MK naming convention ;)

"Ahh, this is a kissing 4 MK2.25 insert ..."

There was a good conversation of another variation of the long 5 on VRF the other day for example.

And this is just subs

i agree. i just wish there was some kind of master list that shows all inserts, dials, parts etc and the dates they were made. would make comparing these parts much easier.

there are in fact very small variations that could be defined for ex. as mk2-1 or mk2-2.
moreover there is also the big problem of the " overlap " : the " long 5 " has been certainly used as pristine equipment from the end of the 50s up to the very late 60s
( or according to some collectors even up to the end of the 60s ) so with an overlap at the beginning with mk1 and then with mk2.

This thread has been really helpful. Thanks everyone for your photos and knowledge base! Indeed it seems that one I have there is a service insert. But usually the 4s don't touch on those though no? Strange that this one looks like it does...

It's not actually touching it. You can see a very tiny line between them....just like mine.
